HOPE SOME ONE CAN HELP. I HAVE A 2444 WITH A ZENITH CARB AND IT KEEPS RUNNING RICH. IF I ADJUST THE JET LEANER, I NEED TO PULL THE CHOKE OUT MORE TO KEEP IT RUNNING. IT BACKFIRES, BLACK SMOKE COMES FROM THE EXHAUST,AND THE PLUGS ARE BLACK. THE GOVENOR MOVES CONSTANTLY ABOUT 1-2 INCHES WHEN AT 1/2 THROTTLE. I REMOVED THE CARB, CLEANED IT AND STILL NO LUCK. EVEN IN COLD WISCONSIN WEATHER ( MINUS 10 DEGREES) I DONT NEED THE CHOKE TO START IT OR USE THE TRACTOR. WHEN COLD IT RUNS MUCH BETTER. WOULD I BE BETTER OFF WITH AN ORIGINAL CARB? THE TRACTOR WAS A COUNTY GRASS CUTTER AND IT DID NOT SEE MUCH ABUSE.

I have a 424 with marvel schneibler and it was the same way...in fact, it would barely run if outside temp was over 50 degrees...neighbor is a mechanic, and said to bend the floats down a 32nd at a time until you get it to lean out a little and get rid of your black smoke.

I have an IH 2400A that had a similar problem. I took the carburetor off at least a half dozen times and cleaned and inspected it with no improvement. The tractor would run too rich and foul the plugs and only run with the choke pulled part way out.

There were two problems which was resolved by two different shops after I finally gave up. One was a defective intake manifold gasket that must have been letting in too much air.

I got the tractor back from a Case Ih shop still running too rich. Then I took it to a country shop that works on old gas tractors. They found the carburetor had the wrong jets. A used one from some past job did the trick.

By the way, mine came from a state park and there is no way to tell who or why the wrong parts might have been installed.

Ken,read your answer about a IH 3414 zeinth carb.
I bought a 3414 and have Carb trouble also,I put on a new Cj2a carb.tractor still runs on 3 cyls.check compression all 125# dist.firing ok.
With cj2a carb, engine throttle works backwords engine wants to rev up too high when giving more throttle. How did you overcome this.Any help would be greatly appreciated.I would also reimberse you for a phone call.
Thanks you, Tom 260-693-2356.
