Snowblower for IH 300 Utility???

I've been plowing our long, steep and narrow gravel driveway with a backblade on the 300U, which works fine except when we get wet, heavy snow. Then I have to tilt the blade to such a steep angle that I'm not moving anything.

So I'm wondering whether it might be possible to rig the tractor with a snowblower. I'd prefer a front-mount (the tractor has the old original all hydraulic front end loader that is not too easy to remove) but would use one on the 3-point if it worked great.

Anyone have experience with a particular brand/model of blower that has worked very well? And will tolerate some gravel in the mix?

My other thought has been a 7 or 8' wide "V" blade on the front with my concrete counterweight on the rear. Any thoughts on this daydream?

(I've discounted the idea of a regular snow blade on the front because in wet snow I'm pretty sure it would turn the tractor sideways when I push.)

Thanks very much for your help.

A fellow has been advertising on the local call-in radio program that he has: "A 66" 2 stage front mount snow blower with 24HP Briggs engine with electric start, and loader bucket mounts for $600". I would think that something like this would be interesting to work with, if you could put some counter weight on the back of the tractor.

Dear Rauville:

Sounds great. Where are you located? Do you have a phone number that might get me to this seller?

Thanks so much.

Bob

Can I throw in $.02 here and say that on the 300 up at my folks farm we had I think a 6' blade. This was an original IH that went on the front loader. We also had a 2pt rear blade for lane work. I plowed a good hand full of one to two foot snows with that, but deeper was when the neighbor would come over. He had a HUGE hi-way truck V PLOW on the front of a BIG John Deere. This thing could go through 5 and 6 feet of snow with just BRUTE power. A 300 is a little at it's limits with a blower in wet snow. Powder snow it should be fine. Just don't beat on your 300 too hard or you will rip up the PTO shaft. Jeff

Bob, you need a single auger 2 stage blower. The width of the blower is also important. You do not want a 7' or 8' blower. A six foot or a 6.5 would be just right for your tractor, even a 5' or 5.5, the blower should be the width of the outside of your rear wheels . You need to be able to run at PTO speed for best performance. Front mounted blowers are nice but carry a heavy price tag for the shafts and hook ups to mount on the front. I saw a front mounted double auger for sale for $6500 with the hardware. New blowers go for around $1800 -$2500 depending on width, double or single auger and size of the fan. I have had a blower for over 20 years without any problems with it, it needs a new tightner sprocket and that's from 20 years of normal wear. In southern Ontario, "Lucknow","Smythe", "McKee" are popular brands, "White", "Huskey", John Deere...all have good reputations. I have a Lucknow and it has been a great piece of machinery..good luck with the snow...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I live in a place where the temperature is almost always above freezing by the time it's finished snowing. So we end up having to shift a lot of wet snow. I've never used a tractor mounted blower although I've recently built myself a back blade, however I have spent a lot of time behind a walk behind two-stage. All I can say is that snowblowers despise wet snow and from what I've found (especially when it's really wet) you might as well shovel it. Hope this helps. SAm in NS
