I was just wondering what do most of you guys use in your parts washer. I bought some parts washer fluid from Northern and it froze.

Hi Brad,

Another thing to watch out for is that some of the new parts washers coming out have pumps in them that must have water based degreasers. Any petroleum based material will eat up the pump.

I have mineral spirits in my parts washer. Before I had the parts washer, I used kerosine in a 5 gallon bucket. I've also used water soluble degeaser, but not in the parts washer. My assessment is that the water soluble stuff will cut the grease faster, but I am not able to use that in my washer because the shop is not heated. I don't think the kerosine would work at all in my parts washer because the viscosity is too high. Even with mineral spirits, when cold, the pump does not want to start. My parts washer is 30 gallon drum type from Northern tool, the one that has the 250 gph pump on it. I do note that Northern now offers a heater for the parts washers. I think that would be OK to use with the water soluble washer fluid, but I'd be hesitant to use it with mineral spirits or kerosine. However, the solvent(whatever it is) is going to do a lot better job when it's warm.

Mineral spirits is still the best in my book. I can buy it for 1.69 / gal.

I go to the paint store and buy the cheapest mineral spirits I can find. It is a lot more aggressive than kerosene and the parts will dry on their own. The down side is that it is a little more flammable and will evaporate over a period of time if you dont leave the parts washer closed.

Brad, at the shop we use varsol and we buy it in the big jug( I think 16 liters) or roughly 4 gallon jug, we add a liter of transmission fluid to it and put it in the parts washer. I use the same at home but it does evaporate over time. I have a "King" parts washer at home and it has a lid to close when not in use to cut down on the evaporation. This won't freeze. We used varsol at my granddad's tractor shop, too. We had three 55 gal drums on their sides on a rack. I think one was for kerosene for the salamanders and the steam jenny. We used 5 gallon buckets cut off 6 inches high and the edges bent over for parts washers. (Maybe they were just buckets and I was the parts washer, 'pends on how you look at it.) I remember one time somebody sold Willis a box of a new kind of rags, blue paper reinforced with nylon or some such, kinda like modern Shop Towels. I thought they were great, everybody else seemed to think "Buy rags? Dumbest thing I ever heard."

I just use kerosene. Always works good for me. If I need to clean something attached to something else, I just dip a rag in it and go cleaning without worrying about damaging paint. In fact, it makes paint nice and shiny, even though I wouldn't use it on a new car or anything...
