I put the head back on my F-20 after putting $500 into it now how tight do i torque the nuts down any info is very much appreciated and i also need a drawbar, shutters and break cables if you have any parts e-mail me at ih_restorer@yahoo.com i might be intrested no scams

I don't know the touque on a farmall, but I just did a JD 2640 .I do it this way 1 Blow the hole in the block out 2 run a tap in to clean the threads 3 Blow it out again and again 4 Run a die down the bolt threads and clean off the threads 5 put the gasket on, then the head, and put the bolts in dry and tighten them to specs ON THE CRANK END OF THE RODS JD SAYS OIL THE THREADS THAT HOLD THE CAP ON BEFORE PUTTING THEM IN No mention of oiling head bolts and I never have,

I make sure the nuts will spin free by hand to the end of the threads before I even start thinking about torque. A burr or two will give a false reading. Chase the threads with a good tap and die. And I agree with using a light oil, I've done many cyinder head jobs on tractors and cars and most all instructions I've ever seen call for oiling the threads. Beware also of studs and nuts that are simply worn out due to thread stretch. If the nut wiggles more than a little bit on the stud, replace both. A bad sign is when you get a nut that seem's to keep taking a little more torque after the rest have stopped "clicking" or squeak's when tightening.

I found that 90-95 was just right on my F-12. Mains get 75# and rods get 45#, in case you needed those specs as well. Always do the head and mains in three increments (ie-45#, 65#, then 75#) up to your final spec, and don't oil the nuts. Do it dry.

I disagree on not using oil, any book, manual, etc., I have ever read strongly recommends lightly oiling the threads. This ensures that you will get a true torque reading. If you do not use some sort of lubricant, then a portion of the torque reading on your wrench will be from overcoming friction, which will give you a false, inaccurate reading. Use some oil, or even a shot of WD-40 or similar.

i was taught by tech school not use anything. Do it dry. oils and lubricants take up clearance, could cause it to come lose in the long run. friction only caused by improper threads.

that tech school stuff might be all right for new equipment but out here in the real world we need to oil those threads. just ask any old mechanic. his stuff stays fixed and the stuff repaired in town by some collage mechanic gets done over. been ther, and ain't NO TOWN MECHANIC TOUCHIN MY STUFF. I'LL MAKE MY OWN MISTAKES, THANK YOU.

I agree, only I don't use oil. Smear a little antiseize on the bolt - someday its going to have to come out again. I broke four studs off when I removed the exhaust manifold on a 350 - added about 3 hours to a 20 minute job.

Torque it rite; If you torque the head bolts dry to 90 ft-lbs that will be the real and repeatable torque on the stud. If you use a lubricant the torque will vary and be somewhat higher. As long as the head gasket don't leak or the head don't warp both methods are fine.
Reminds me years ago we used to "hot" stud torque an important stud and when it cooled the torque value was calculated as equivalent to 2000 ft-lbs
8 of these fasteners had a job to do.
So that 90 maybe variant to 105 ft-lbs torque on a F-20 head will last the duration.
