I have a IH 560D that I understand takes "HiTran" fluid in the transmission. Is this Automatic Transmission fluid or hydraulic oil or what? I am used to putting 90 wt oil in transmissions but understand here the hydraulic pump uses the same fluid. From the name am not sure what this is.--

A retired IH mechanic told me when the SMTA's first came out, they used regular transmission gear oil. They started having trouble with the TA when the weather turned cold. They tried a few different remedies to thin the oil in the winter. That's about the time IH had HyTran developed for them.

HY-TRAN+ is about the best oil out there for your 560. Use it.

HyTrans is a special hydraulic oil developed by Case IH to run in their tractors.

I don't recall Case having a refinery.

HyTran is a hydraulic oil, but other hydraulic oils such as Mobilfluid 424 is just as good. Just make sure it meets the specs it calls for. It calls for HTF spec #MS-1207 and holds 40 quarts.

LOL - yep!

HyTran is a good fluid. They wouldn't sell it otherwise. It's just not anything real unique.

The only put IH oil in an IH, only JD oil in a JD cracks me up.

Most people would never dream of changing oil in their tractor and putting in 2 quarts of Chevron, and 3 quarts of Mobil, and topping it off with a couple of quarts of Case/IH. However, equipment manufacturers do it all the time. I don't know Case/IH specifics, but John Deere bids out their oil. A couple of years ago, if you were to buy their 50+ 15w40, and say you needed a 30 gal barrel, a couple of 5 gal cans, and maybe a case of quarts - you had oil from 3 different manufacturers. Sure, it all meets their specs but the difference is this: Additive packages for oil vary depending on the base stock they are working with. Some base stocks need more of this to do that, etc. Each oil independently are fine - the potential for problems lie when you start mixing them. While it is EXTREMELY rare for any problems at all, a person really never knows how the additives from one oil may react with the additives from another.

Hy-tran is unique. That's the point. Hy-tran removes water and other crud. Hy-tran is specific to suit farm tractor rear ends, TA's, and power-shifts. It's just plain foolish to use anything other than Hy-tran in an IH tractor. Viscosity oil blends it specifically for Case New Holland. - Dave

Jay your last few lines is exactly why I prefer IH in my IH and JD in my JD. How am I supposed to know who makes what oil, and when someone else starts making it for them, at least if I use the brand made for them and there is a change they should be compatable. Just my thinking Brian.
