450 Diesel Smoke

My grandfather has a 450 diesel. When it starts on gas it smokes a little (white smoke) and then when you switch it over to diesel it continues to smoke (white smoke). The smoke gets a little better after it has warmed up but does not go away. Does this mean that the head is cracked or is there something else. I have read that if the head is cracked it is expensive to repair. The tractor is complete and straight everywhere else. If it is the head, is it worth having it repaired or does the whole engine need to be junked? Any input would be helpful. Thanks.

perhaps check the radiator level. If it goes down, then it must be going out the exhaust(if you have no radiator leaks) If you need a replacement head, I have one with injectors for $400. Its an MD/td6 head but should work fine for you. Prob take an hour or two to swap the heads. -Greg, greg@supercgis.com

My 400D does the same thing in this cold weather, until it starts working. My MD does it too, but I haven't had it under load yet. Before you rule it the head check the oil for water and the water for oil, and maybe do a compression test on it. good luck Geoff

Is it getting water in the oil or vice versa? Is it bubbling into the radiator when it's running? Those symptoms would also point to a cylinder head crack or bad gasket, but you won't know until you disassemble the engine. Cylinder head welding is getting common now, and may be a cost effective repair depending on the state of the rest of the engine. You'll have to evaluate what shape the rest of the engine is in to make an intelligent decision. They are definitely repairable, for a price. Brian
