This is a real strange, potential rube goldberg idea: snowblower attached to front of 140. how would one transfer (reasonably, efficenently and safely) pto from back under length of tractor to front? Anyone done this before? Any ideas or comments?
TIA, Tom

there's a guy up my way with an old ferguson, kinda like the N fords, with a high-lift on it, he ran a shaft under the tractor, runs it with a chain, and built himself a snowblower from an old water heater, hangs it on the lift and runs it from the pto, just doesnt lift it too high.

Tom,

I'm not optimistic about how well the 140 could power a blower, but here's how I made up a forward facing drive on a Cub. The 140 wouldn't be much different... just larger.

see a guy a couple of years ago with this on his super A. he had a complete engine/ trans unit from a small pickup including radiator hung from back.trans output shaft faced foward an attached to a two stage blower on front of A.had clutch and throttle rigged up near seat on tractor.gas line was tied into tractor tank.just idled A in first and cranked up power unit for blower.see it work and cleared snow like you won't belive.

Bob: Now that would work, but why not put a 400 cubic inch engine back there, Give the Super A better ballast, plus you wouldn't need to just idle the tractor. But then you would have to add a larger fuel tank. He was probably right.

Better still, why not make the second engine a Super A engine complete with hood and grill. Now that would make people look, seeing that comming down the driveway, blowing snow. Any of you guys got a good snow blower for sale.

Like Hugh says, the 1st gear on the 140 is too fast for a snow blower or a rototiller. I would think though this could be done like the sweeper brushes were done on these tractors. That is replacing the crank pulley on the front of the engine with a splined one rather than the one for the hand crank. Actually, I think this is a bolt on attachment. One of my Shop Mules has one on it. Then you run a shaft though the crank hole to drive the attachment. I suppose there must have been some type of hand clutch to throw the thing in and out of gear. We don't have much snow here in East Tennessee, but I used to use a 140 with the IH front blade to plow snow. It was entirely adequate up to snow two feet deep. (We did have two feet a couple of times over the 10 years I owned that tractor). A 5 ft snow blade even if you have to build it is going to be a lot cheaper than rigging a snow blower.

Tom: Snow blowers are much like tillers, you need live PTO and dual range transmission. Your 140 will not have the power and will be too high sped. I have watched guys blowing snow, they do a lot of stopping, either lack of power, or enough power and they don't wish to blow the snowblower to bits. Even the guy that blew my deivway with the 150 hp Ford, and that was a big dual auger blower. It was a stop and go situation, he tells me if he didn't go careful tractor would demolish the snowblower.

I like your idea, really all you need is a shaft under the tractor, and chain driven from PTO and put a 3 point hitch on front of tractor. Best tractor to use is one of the utilities with dual range tranny. If you want to move snow with an offset Farmall send me an e mail, I will send you a picture. Remember I let the guy with the 150 hp Ford blow my snow because the flesh was not willing, however I am happey to report the 130 is willing, ready and able to do the job.

Tom;

I would think you could rig it up the same as many belly mowers are powered. Run a pulley or sprocket on your pto straight down to another(properly fastened), then run your pto shaft up to the blower. My question would be whether the tractor could power it! Mr. MacKay should be along shortly to give you more precise information.

We might have to promote Hugh to Dr. "A" MacKay. A lot of knowledge and practical experience riding around in his head. Lucky for the rest of us that he is willing to share.

Randy: I don't think that would fit too well. I even get a bit edgey when a few of the guys call me Mr. MacKay. Just keep it Hugh, I like that best, unless of course you want to tare a strip off me, then you can call me anything you want. Don't count on me lying down though.

Hugh works just fine with me. I was just raised to show respect where respect is due. Sometimes even when it isn't. Unfortunately there are too many in the younger generations that don't respect their own parents let alone anyone or anything else. Too much of ME, ME, ME. Have a good one and stay warm.

Randy: Doing just that, I have become a real fire side kind of guy. Why I even let my neighbor plow my snow. He has a cab.

Guys;

This thread reminds me of a favorite saying I heard in a movie. "Calling me Mr.... is like putting an elevator in an outhouse, it just don't belong."

Hugh, as Randy mentioned I feel my parents voices in my head if I don't try to be polite, but in the future I will try to refrain from calling you Mr.

Simple just run a shaft under the belley to the front put a chain drive off the rear pto. Not hard to do as thats the ways i am going to run my snowblower on my A.
