The book says I have to split the tractor to install a new clutch in my 1948 M. The old gentleman down the road said all I have to do is remove the belly pump. Before I go to all the work of spliting it I wondered what some of you thought.

Thanks: Hank in Homer

Thanks for all the response. Can I tell if it is a 11 or 12 inch clutch from the bottom after I drop the pump?

I would think you could see enough in there to measure and determine the diameter.

If it is a 1948, it should have the 11 inch diameter clutch and you don't have to split to rework the clutch. It the flywheel needs work, you have to split it. I have a write up on how to do it based on my experience doing it a couple years back. For a first timer, definitely more than a 2 hour job. Send it to you if you will post your E mail.

Haas, I too am getting ready to put a new clutch in my 1949 M. Could you please send me a copy of that write-up? Thanks!

Had to split my 52 M to replace the clutch since it has the 12 inch clutch.

Unless you need to have the flywheel resurfaced, you dont have to slpit it.I have changed out several clutches with out splitting it.Took only a couple of hours as I recall.

I had rather split tractor. I have a good hoist and a lot of blocks and also this old man dislikes working on my back under the tractor. I guess it just depends on what kind of shop and how good you feel. Split tractor = more time work from bottom = harder work

If it has 11" clutch it can be removed through belly pump opening.Have removed mine this way, sure beats splitting tractor.
