How difficult is it to change outside axle seals? Do you have to drain then trans? How much do seals cost? Thanks in advance.

Mark

Try this number at your local auto parts store(C/R 25065). It'll probably save you some money, but you'll have to get felt seals from dealer.

You don't have to drain the transmission if it is at the correct level. Level is just up to about the axle level. Do one wheel at a time and just jack and support the side you are working on. The tilt of the tractor is nearly enough that only a very small amount of oil will come out. Hardest part is getting the wheel off. You will need lifting equipment. Wheel hub is heavy and so is the rim and tire, especially if it contains solution.

Just changed them on my 39 H. Drop transmission oil level and as another said the hard part was getting the wheels off. Make sure you block it up good so you do not rock it off the blocks as you walk the wheel off. While you have the plate off make sure the grease hole is open and look the bearing over.

Set the tractor so that the seal is a little higher than your check plug. If you have the transmission fluid to that level. It sometimes makes it harder to get the wheel off so raise it after you take your wheel off.

You have to remove the wheels to perform this operation. The biggest job will be to get the wheels off, depending on how rusty they are. The oil seals in general are not that hard to change.I am not sure if you have to drain the oil but I am guessing because there is a seal there you could find oil once it is removed.
Hope this helps, Good luck
