Some of my tractors make the whining sound in the rear end and others are quiet as a mouse. I was on an M today and it seams like the sound comes from the diff. Anyone ever rebiult one and made it quiet agian?

The Whining on my '47 M emamates from worn gears in the belly pump.

If it is most noticable in 5Th gear at high idle then it is most likely that the ring gear and pinion are not adjusted correctly.

Don't know, the C, H, and M are relatively quite, unlike the A and B. 5th will make a mild humming sound. 4th is slightly noticable, the other 3 gears are relatively quiet. Likely most of the noise you hear is normal. You will know when something is wrong.

The typical noise you hear is usually from the straight cut gears in the transmission. As they wear, the mess pattern changes over time allowing more noise with age and use.
