Do the brushes in the starter ever wear enough to need replacement ? How do they act when they go ?

Greg

Yeah - starter brushes can wear out. Symptoms a are slow, erratic or no crank condition. Sometimes this is accompanied by smoke coming from from around the commutator dust band.

If the brushes do need replacement, guarantee also the commutator is pitted/burned. It should be cleaned up and if necessary the mica between the commutator bars undercut. Otherwise the starter may not develop full power with the new brushes. Also the new brushes will wear out quickly.

Yes they do and as far as how they act most of the time the starter just stops working but some times if you tap on it the starter will try for a few more times. If they are getting bad you can also burn the armature because of them arcing
