I have an int.444d. My pto jumps out of gear and goes in hard when engaged. It doesn't matter if its under load or not and sometimes it will stay in for hours and then next time seconds. Anyone experience this? and what did you find when you dug into it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Hound.

Hi Hound, may be a bent rod or bad bushing and worn shaft. The PTO shaft have two sections, one frome engine clutch and other to the rear end. In the middle, it have the shift collar and a guide bushing. May be this one is worn. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

When we had a 434D many years ago it was difficult to engage the PTO. We adjusted the clutch pedal adjustment to spec and this fixed it for about a year and then we had to adjust fingers on clutch pressure plate. The problem was the heads of the adjusting bolts had worn and by turning them 1/4 turn the pivot piont was now on a non worn part. This adjustment can be done thru the inspection hole under the clutch housing.

Good luck

I THINK your 444D has the same PTO mechanism as the B-414, 424, 354, etc. My B-414 had been jammed into gear prior to me getting it and in so doing, the shifter rod was bent to the point it would not stay in gear. I pulled the rod out of detent, pushed it forward a good bit and it worked. If it has been jumping out for quite awhile, this may be just a bandaid approach, but, it's worth a try. One of these days, I'll tear mine down to see where the real problem is. Good luck.

Thanks Guys. I have tried bending the control lever forward. It seems to help, it also gives the rod a bit of "play space". A good control lever must have been quite expensive, because they sure didn't go overboard. I was wondering if it had something to do with the 2 stage clutch. Hoping it stays together until the tear down season between snowblowing and haying.

The PTO lever sometimes gets bent and could cause this problem. My friend had this problem on his 2444 ( industrial 444). If not this it is internal.
