Suitable Oil for Old Tractors

I have a Farmall 200 with new cylinders put in a couple of years ago. The manual recommends using 30W low ash oil. I was wondering if I could use a modern 10W30 multiweight oil in place of the old single weight. I would like to use this in cold weather, but with the single weight oil, it seems to start pretty slowly when it is cold. When the weather warms up, it starts fine (what with the carb kit, new cables and alternator I put in as well - thanks Hugh and all you others for advice). The engine was well cleaned during the cylinder work, so it is not loaded up internally with sludge like some old engines I have seen. Will multiweight oil make it a more 3 season machine, or could it cause some sort of harm?

I think I had the same problem. The A had set for at least 3 years. i ran it off and on for maybe 2 hours, changed the oil to 15w40 and it started smoking. i've changed it to 30w now and just waiting to see if it stops.

Keep us posted and good luck. Is it the typical "blue" oil smoke?

I bought a cub a few years ago and put multi weight oil in it and it started smoking-went back to regular oil but must have been to late-it smoked till the day I sold it several years later. I don't know? I've read on here several times where guys say its ok.

I believe that adding detergent oil to an engine that is full of crud and has not been running a detergent oil can loosen up that stuff that was sticking safely to the innards. Since I know my engine was dip cleaned when I had the new cylinders, I am not so worried about stirring up the muck. Perhaps that is what happened to the Cub? It is hard to say now. Changes in oils can lead to problems though. Ask Lycoming (aero engines). Mobile 1 airplane oil caused problems in some airplane engines. Result, Mobile had to replace some very expensive engines some years ago. What is going on in there is a sort of black science that not everyone fully understands. Filters were also designed with various oils in mind, so changing to an oil that the filter is not compatible with can lead to trouble as well. Somehow buying a new Kubota is not going to be in the cards for me. Regards.

Thank you for the reply. That is what I was guessing and it sure makes it easier to buy oil. That low ash single weight oil is not carried by many places. Have a good one.

The refining of oil is a constantly evolving process. The oils of today are vastly superior to the oils of the 50s. Use the best quality oil you can get, and the tractor will last much longer than it would have in the 50s. Multigrade is fine. Change the filter when changing oil.

Modern multi-grade oil will be just fine.
