Writing for a friend that doesn't use computers. Has '65 140 that the touch control hydraulic lifts his cultivators easily but doesn't go down well at all. Labors the engine to the point of stalling. Any ideas?

Drain out the fluid, remove the filter screen and clean it. Put in new HyTran fluid. Be sure to remove fill plug before you remove the drain plug or you may get wet with fluid, as there is no vent and frequently there is pressure in the reservoir. The filter screen is removed by removing the four bolts in the flange on the left side of the unit (opposite the manifold block). Get a new gasket for the screen. What you are describing is typical for these units, as they most all labor on the rearward stroke, but likely it will improve with new fluid and a clean spring. If the tractor has the helper spring on it, one reason for the laboring is that the pressure of the big spring must be overcome on the rearward stroke, although most all of them do labor some even with no spring.
