Got up here this morning, read news of the day, checked YT, checked phone messages. Lo a message from my brother Frank, on the east coast. Tractor problems. I phoned Frank. Plowing snow with the 230 as he depresses clutch he gets a growling noise. If tractor is running and he gets on tractor is hard to get in gear as transmission will not stop turning. With tractor in gear and clutch down it growls. Slip the transmission to neutral and continue to hold clutch down and noise stops. Our diagnosis is pilot bushing, as release bearing will still be turning. What is your opinion guys, are we right? Have we overlooked anything?

Frank is aprox. 2 years younger than I, apparently he hasn't given in to a big blue machine blowing his snow. I have tried on numerous ocasions to get Frank into YT discussions. See the method in my madness, now he will have to thank you guys.

Greased the throwout bearing, didn't make any difference. Didn't think that was the problem anyway. Have looked in inspection hole, nothing unusual. When the tractor is in gear, with clutch depressed and engine running, the clutch and shaft are not turning, pilot bearing in end of crank is rotating around the clutch shaft, that is mainly when I get the noise.

Frank, Welcome to YT. Its a great place to get a lot of information on whatever project or problem you have. None of us knows everything, but each of us know something, and the variety of solutions and comments are astounding. Heck, Frank, if we dont have a question, we may even talk about the weather or Mars. Its sort of like sitting around the pot bellied stove at the grain elevator or the feed store swaping ideas. I won't be much help on your clutch problem, but maybe something else I will, or sombody will. Hope you keep comming back, and Good Luck on the clutch.

Frank: Welcome aboard YT discussion forums. If you go down the page a bit you will see that Paul in MI suggested I shouldn't tell you my opinion, thus forcing you to come here for advice. I went to bed early last evening, had every intention of doing as I told Paul, if you didn't respond. I even got up at 4 am here so as to get you out of bed 5 am AST. You turned the tables on me, phoned me a 1/2 hour after I went to bed.

If you recall, my daughter Marilyn has a photo of you and I looking at YT some years back, right after I got involved. Everyone in the family agrees that the photo reminds them of two kids opening presents under the tree on Christmas morning.

On the tractor problem I think the consences is your problem could be pilot bushing, clutch disk or presure plate. I don't think it is release bearing as it would be noisy whenever you depress clutch whether in gear or out. Unless it is as simple as fingers on presure plate out of adjustment you will have to split the tractor to find out for sure. As I said last evening there is a couple of good threads on page 3 and 4 by Dave in CT, on adjusting the fingers.

As I said earlier welcome aboard, don't be afraid to ask questions on here. These guys on here are loaded with information and experiences. I will tell you there is not a more helpful group anywhere. They even start to worry about someone who hasen't been on for a few days.

Hugh, my vote is pilot bearing. I don't know if 230 is same as SC but SC only had bronze bushing for pilot bearing. When we had SC with loader on it and loader hydraulics supplied by PTO driven pump, we had to change pilot bearing about every 3 years. It would give same symptons as you described. Never changed a clutch or throwout bearing in the 6 years that we owned SC.

I hope your brother has a heated garage to split the 230 or it is warmer in N.S. than eastern Ont.

From what you describe, the input shaft is not entirely free with the clutch in. It could be the pilot, clutch disk, or pressure plate/fingers. All kinds of things can happen to any one of these. I would look for an inspection plate and take a good gander first.

Sounds like pilot bearing to me. Pilot bearing only turns when clutch is depressed and transmission is NOT turning (ie in gear). If you have tractor running and push clutch in and there is no growl until tractor is in gear, then definitaly pilot bearing.

when the clutch is in and the transmission is in neutral the input shaft will turn with throw out bearing/pressure plate as a unit and not make noise when there is a problem ,there for it think you have a pressure plate problem . probably release fingers /disc.

re Bill b va comment
I agree with what he said about the shaft/clutch/pressure plate turning as a unit because with the clutch depressed and the tractor running, pulling it out of gear into neutral, the noise stops.

Hugh, Tell Frank you're not gonna tell him whats wrong or how to fix his 240 unless he starts comming on YT with the rest of us guys. Besides, I'm sure Peabody can find room for one more geezer in Alabama should we just decide to thumb our noses at all this snow and cold.

Paul: He better get his act together before bedtime tonight, or he may find the Sunday morning wake up call is even earlier than the Saturday morning call was. I have another brother Ed. Ed used to like going out drinking with the boys, 5 am he would call everyone just to ask how their heads were. Ed and I really never tended to make too much use of our beds after 5 am.

Hugh, Was just wondering if he has tried greasing the throwout bearing through the bellhousing, and if that helped or not?

Hugh.I might be wrong on this but the only way that the pilot bearing stops turning is when the engine is not turning.Paul.

You very well could be right Hugh, usually the throw out bearing will growl until you push in on the clutch then it will stop.
