My 140 slips out of gear with only the slightest of pull and the 2 gear is doing the same. My brother and law own the tractor together and he had a fellow he knows take the tractor apart. He said a bolt had come loose and apparently eat up a gear or so and we should rebuild the entire transmission..He gave a price of 1300.00 parts and 1300 labor. Sounds as high as a georgia pine to me..I dont see many questions on 140's but we have a lot of them in the piedmont section of NC. Anyone have any suggestions? I "aint" spending that much money on that tractor. Sheet metal needs work. Has a new clutch and motor runs good.
Can you buy reconditioned transmissions??
Thanks for any help.
Dennis

Dennis, Salvage parts for any of the A thru 140 Farmalls should be redilly available in your part of the country as they were used extensively in the tobacco fields. Traveling through Kentucky, Virginia and N.C,, I have seen more consentration of those models than any other place. I'm sure if you ask around you'll find salvage or used transmission parts a lot cheaper than the $1,300 quoted you.

Those transmissions are fairly common. I have an extra one sitting here but don't know how I would get it to you. Thirteen hundred dollars sounds a little high though seeing how its hard to get a hundred dollars for one of them.

Dennis: My 130 (same transmission) did this about 2 years ago, All it took was the detent ball and spring in the plate shift lever is mounted in. I took that top plate off expecting the worst. Cost of the ball and spring were under $10.

Now if your into gears, still shouldn't be a whole lot of money. It's the same transmission 1939 to 1979, somewhere in the order of 1/2 million of them built. As far as actual gears in there C through 240 are the same, so there is another 300,000. Those gears should sell for $50. per dozen, as not many of those tractors went to the scrapyard because of transmission problems. One item you do see at scrapyards are these transmissions intact.

Hugh, I agree that the scrapyards should have plenty of transmissions. Most of the ones I have gone thru seem to imply that the reason for the tractor being there was engine problems more than anything else. Usually there are far more transmission parts available than engine parts. I haven't priced them, but I'm sure Dennis can beat that $1,300 figure by a significent amount. Perhaps by 1/2 or more, especially if he is allowed to remove and salvage the parts himself.

Dennis,

I'd be looking for a parts tractor before I spent that kind of money. We have a couple of 140's but we're planning to rebuild and restore them.

I'll be on the lookout for a transmission for one also. What state are you in?

Check to see if there is a big tractor salvage yard in Knightdale- about 10 miles from you?
