I finally gave in to the guy across the road, with the 150 hp, 4x4 Ford and snow blower, offering remove the snow from my driveway. The 46 year old Farmall 130 was quite willing but the 62 year old flesh was not. That bloomin northwest wind has been blowing here for a week. They call it lake effect, but man that wind never got that much velocity on Lake Huron, and to last so long and steady. Paul, I could see Saginaw Bay written right into it. Early on the weather guys were calling it lake effect, last evening it was Alberta clipper. I guess I and the weather man should retract that name calling, and just plain call it what it is, an old fashioned SW Ontario winter. Down with the global warming people, the creator is sending you a message.

Hugh, Those global warming people won't get the message anyway. They're dummer than a bag of hair and more stubborn than a wall. Lol

1/23/2004 Montgomery, Alabama, 56 degrees and sunshine. And no wind. Beautiful day. Become a snowbird, Hugh.

Peabody, Are you telling us that Ronnie and the boys in the band had it right all along? "Sweet Home Alabama".

Need I say more? When the group "Alabama" sings "Christmas in Dixie" and mentions the line "There's snow in the pines," they just saw it in a magazine or something.

Carried some stuff from just below Birmingham to Sarasota, FL. If we in Alabama think we got it good, those folks in Florida are basking in it. Darn near got heat stroke while down there, ran air conditioner most of the time in the truck. Last time we had snow here in central Alabama was in '93. Sister mover to Buffalo once, stayed to June and left right after she got snowed on the day before.

Hi Hugh,

They say Buffalo is the snow capital, but when I traveled down around Olean, the folk down there said that Buffalo isn't getting anything like the snow they get. They say the snow just blows right up over and down on them a lot more than what Buffalo gets. 62 isn't old! 90 is getting old!

Getting soft Hugh? Nah - yer just bein’ smart! I’ve graciously accepted my son’s offer to keep my driveway clear this season with his 4x4 truck. A lot more comfortable and convenient for me than blading it with an open tractor – especially with the –20 F and lower wind chill that seem to be the norm this winter!

Incidentally after that NW wind blows thru your place it slides over Lake Ontario, picks up another load of moisture then dumps it as snow here in western NY. We’re running out of space to put the stuff with the blades. Gonna need a snowblower - or a thaw - very soon!

And about global warming? Judging by how fast the gas meter is spinning and how quickly my woodpile is dwindling I’m convinced it’s only BS!

Bob: I knew it, I knew it, Paul in Saginaw MI didn't get that wind slowed down, neither did I, you probably didn't either. However the the mountains along the NY border with MA, NH and VT did, thus Scotty was able to enjoy coasting in the sunshine with the kids.

Hugh, As I've stated on here a time or so, we have nothing but a single strand of barbed wire about 2 miles west of us to slow down one of these Alberta Clippers. Today was a little calmer, but yesterday was an adventure with 20 plus mph winds most of the day. Brrrrr rrrrr.

Paul: I rather liked Peabody's solution. I wonder how he would react to a bus load of us landing there and staying until mid March. Really we have to go where we can chew the rag over old iron. I know he has a good Super C, must have neighbors with larger and smaller Farmalls.

Hugh, I know what you mean about letting someone a little younger take over. We shouldnt be disturbed nor feel guilty by that reality however, since I was able to shovel snow about 20 years longer than I was able to play baseball. As far as the Global Warming Wackos are cincerned, I haven't heard a word from them in several weeks. They must all be crowded up next to the fire or on their way south. Come to think of it, Hugh, Alberta does get blamed for a lot of cold weather around here. What are they doing wrong?

Oh Paleeease! 62 is no longer considered old. You must be spending too much time at the keyboard. The guy who sold me my last tractor lives in central Illinois and plows 72 driveways everytime it snows with a little john deere and a blower. He's a LOT older than you. I'd like to continue with this unwarranted criticism, but it's starting to snow here and I need to go holler at the wife to get her shovel out.

Dave, Maybe the reason your 72 yr old neighbor is still pushing snow is because he hasn't learned yet how to pass the gavel. Besides, some of these youngsters get that warm fuzzy feeling from doing a good deed for us geezers. Far be it for me to deny them that.

He knows. He just won't and more power to him. The longer he keeps it up the longer he'll live.
Ever notice, Paul, that the oldest guys are the guys who keep in the traces? As for me, they can have what I got when they are strong enough to take it from me.

Scotty: I have to say I have never been fond of cold wind. Low temperatures never bothered me until this winter, and even yet I don't mind the low temperature too bad if there is no wind. Wind around here doesn't blow in gusts, it just blows steady at about 30 to 40 mph all day and night and has been doing it for close to a week. Yesterday at 1 pm plowed driveway clean, when I got home at 5:30 pm pickup had to be put in 4x4 for driveway. For four miles to the west there is no trees. Out on the corn and soybean fields you can still see stubble, not a lot of snow, around the buildings drifts are starting to reach 6 feet. It has snowed some every day. I was on the road yesterday with tractor trailer and at times you couldn't see more than 50 feet, 4 way flashers on, at about 20 mph, and with the turbulance a trailer stires up you know the guy behind you could hit you before he sees you if he is not careful. I had a guy pass me, driving an SUV, I couldn't see his head lights until he was 1/3 the way along side the trailer, and on a road with two way traffic. Auto makers must be selling radar for those vehicles. I haven't been out a lot trucking in this weather, but can tell you when I get home from a day of it, it's awfully easy to let that guy in the big blue cab, in shirt sleeves, and tuned into his radio, come up the driveway, blowing snow. He can even blow about the blue tractor, I will not complain.
