Hi I have a 1946 Farmall H I bought when I was 12. I am now 15 and am putting new rings and rod bearings in it along with getting the head checked. While I have it torn down I thought I would repaint it. Not a perfect job just spruce it up. What paint, primmer, hardner, reducer, and thinner do you reccommend? I am now using an angle grinder with wirebrush to take off paint. What should I do after it is off? I hope to learn to paint now so I can paint the rest of the tractors to come. Thanks

Matt, I hand sand everything. it is still the best way to prep metal. if the hood and tim work is unchipped you can just sand and repait but as there are scratches and chips you need to take those parts clear to bare metal or the scrapes will show through your new paint every time. you can do a pretty good job with Case IH 2150, it is good paint. I have given up using primer. just thin the paint a little and start squirting. Go slow and don't try to get it red all at once. The first coat you just want to lay down a light film so the next coats will have something to stick to. then just keep going over it til it is well cover. remember to point the gun to get up under and around all the hard to get to places. the last coat you need to put on heavy enough so it looks wet. this will give you a nice gloss. And with just a little practice you won't have any runs. The first tractor I painted was a D-15 Allis when I was 15. I used persion orange from the Allis dealer and it came out looking better than new.

Why have you given up using primer? It gives the paint something to bond to, and primer surfacer on the sheet metal can be sanded smooth and reapplied until the scratches and small imperfections disappear. Lot of work but you get a better finish. I know of no paint where the manufacturer does not recommend primer. In theory, if the old paint is in good shape and compatable with the new paint, it can be sanded and topcoated without primer or sealer, but I don't think that happens very often.

The best and also the most expensive way is to remove all the old paint and use epoxy primer, then acrylic enamel or urethane on the cast, along with epoxy primer on the sheet metal, followed by a sanded surfacer until smooth, then topcoat. If the paint on your tractor is in relatively good shape, you can sand it, but you still need the epoxy primer. If you want a good job stay away from tractor store paints, they will fade, particularly if the tractor is outdoors. The absolute minimum quality is Case/IH 2150, but it is not as good as PPG, DuPont, or Martin Senour (NAPA). If you want to save your lungs (possibly your life) along with some money, use acrylic enamel without hardener (or Case-IH 2150 without hardener). A good supplied air system, which is mandatory for hardeners will cost about twice what the paint does. Hardened paint, either acrylic enamel or acrylic urethane will give a more durable, glossier finish.

Farmall H; When you expose clean metal, cover it with a spray can primer from an auto parts store or discount stores like WalMart. You can spray or brush on the wheel rim(s)silver color. You can use a one inch wood chisel to clean off grease, grime and thick bedded dust. Cheap engine starter fluid(ether) cuts oil film quickly(Be careful not to use this product near sparks or open flame situations. You should have a farm supply business near your location to get original or compatible Farmall colors for your rig.

Be very careful, if you use hardner you need a mask that can supply you with air. If you dont use the right mask you can destroy your lungs, so be very very careful and take the time to educate yourself on the safe use of these hardners

martin/senior cross fire paint,primer and reducer.also hardener,paint code is 99N224 at the napa store.when all the paint is removed go over it with 800 grit sand paper to prep it for paint.
