Broken grease zerks

First of all is it Zerks or Zerts?
On my 300U I have many zerks broken off the linkage on the fast hitch and other places on the tractor. They appear to be pressed in as I can see some of the zert left in the hole. What is the best way to replace these? I was thinking about drilling them out and then tapping for regular zerts but am afraid of getting the fileings in there and wearing things out. I'll wait and see what some of you suggest. Thanks

Your not alone on this problem Randy. It is time consuming but If the zert does not take grease then I remove disassemble drill and tape like IH should have done in the first place.

Not all engineering was good. Drive in zerts are a pain in the neck. Zerts don't last forever and you can't change them.

Slow and easy does it. Cordless drill on slow speed AND slowly. You will find that most of the time these don't go all of the way to the bottom of the hole. LONG time ago I did my dad's 300 and it might be a 1/8 drill. NAPA had them and they are real little. Use a brass hammer to reinstall them. Clean out the hole with an air hose but wear eye protection or close your eyes and turn away!!!! If the grease is REALLY old and hard you can heat the casting a LITTLE with a tourch with pressure on the fitting at the same time with a grease gun. That will make the grease flow most of the time. Fun-Fun Jeff

I use a 1/4" drive socket and extension to drive them in, find a socket that just fits over the ball and on the boss and tap it home. Works every time,
Van

Zerk is a brand name of a grease fitting. Alemite is another brand of grease fitting. There may be others. It's like calling an adjustable wrench a Crescent. That's a brand name too. Thanks. MT.

I usually tap an easy-out into the hole and bring the threads out of there.

No grease at all won't help wear either... drill them out and try to wash out as much as possible with some type of spray solvent... maybe brake or carb cleaner

Right you are Dave, and a magnet like on one of these little shirt pocket screwdrivers can help get chips out also. Thanks MT.
