IH's cotton picker tractors were often somewhat different than their regular tractors. Don't know if this was the case for the 404 or not. In any event, there were 2240 Farmall 404's built, so they are relatively rare. There were 8256 International 404 utilities built.

Kip: The 404 is one tractor I have never seen up close anyhow. This includes both Farmall and utility models. I do have an IT manual here as the tractor is in same book with 130, 140, etc. As I see it this the 404 is really a newer, improved version of the 240, more engine, wider range of transmission choices.

The 404 is a tractor that never sold many copies. IH's own competition from British diesels with live pto actually sold for less money. They actually sold for less money than a 140. For whatever reason IH management decided to price the 140 and 404 off the market. They will claim because it was cheaper to build tractors in Britain. That may be, but I think the British would have been smart enough to build a 140 or a 404. The 140 did survive for another 10 years, then they did manage to kill the offset tractor with offshore junk.

Hugh, In reality the offshore junk did kill the 140, but in your eyes and the eyes of many others, the A-140 will always be alive. I would like to live long enough to see my 42 hit the 100 year old mark. That would be a treat to me!

Scotty: That will indeed be an interesting day in history as the letter series Farmalls turn 100 years. Just think in reality no one who designed them, built them, sold them or bought them new and farmed with them will be alive. In my opinion the letter series Farmalls are still the best looking tractor of them all. The 56 series were far more functional, but hey that is just evolution.

Hi Tom, I will be 90 in 2042. So I have a chance, if I can keep the blood pressure down!

Tom: He will be 86 or 87 at that time, so he has possibilities. He probably will not look as sharp as he did in that photo he was circulating couple of weeks back. He allready doesn't that sharp anymore.

The letter series Farmalls and I will be ovserving our centenial celebrations together, along with Gone With The wind, The Wizard of OZ, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Johnny Vander Meer's 2 consecutive no hitters. 1939 was indeed a awesome year.
