There was a great debate here about a year ago about replacing the oil based filter with a K&M. Anyhow, has anyone done this for a 300? What was the model/size? What has been the result?

K&N makes their claim to fame by stating that their filters give good airflow. I won't dispute this - but it is at an additional cost. IMHO, these types of filters just don't do as well with what they are designed to do - filter air! If you only intend to run your tractor in parades, the K&N might work fine. Personally, I'd never use a pleated paper or cotton mesh filter of this sort if my tractor was out in the field under the usual dusty conditions. Nothing beats a good oil bath air cleaner. Harder to maintain, but effective!

Well i am getting ready to make air filter setup for my 460 utility since the one that was on there isn't the right one anyway...I think the K&N would be fine as long as you include a prefilter. The oil baths are messy and cumbersome to maintain..(my opion) besides alot of the pipes leading to the carb from oil baths have alot of gunk in them which means at some point they weren't doing the job (to be fair it was probably due to someone not maintaining it). Your filter should be enough to accomodated your air flow. A good judgement is to look a a car motor with similar size engine and pick a filter with similar size. I have made air filters for a number of motorcycles that I do performance work on...so a tractoer can't be any different.

I remember the debate -- my question is why, IMO the oil bath is just as good if not better. There is some controversy about K&N (only K&N,and not the usual paper filter used on modern vehicles and tractors) on some of the automotive forums -- it may not be too good at filtering out small dust particles as it is advertised to do, just what a tractor is always in, and would need to be cleaned daily -- just something to consider.

I'd actually rank the K&N and oil bath both about the same, POOR. Dry pleated paper element that's large enough is best for both flow and removing dirt from the combustion air. There will be about 20 posts to follow claiming the K&N's are great and as many about the oil baths being great but I've done an oil analysis test that confirms that the K&N's let dirt into the oil. And the steel mesh that oil bath cleaners use You can almost see thru. ALL heavy equip. manufacturers use two-stage dry pleated paper elements now because THEY WORK.

No argument, are there even any equipment makers that use oil bath anymore? One reason may be that paper is cheaper to produce and keeps the filter makers in business. I have a K&N on my GMC pickup, thought I could feel slightly more throttle response when I installed it several years ago, but have never clocked it. I don't use it in dusty conditions. I would certainly not want to convert it to oil bath. I just like leaving things original on older tractors.
