I'm looking at a Farmall that is stored in a garage. There is stuff stored up next to the tractor and I couldn't get a good look at the serial number tag. What I could see showed 173473 JL and it said model F. I checked my books which don't show a model F with that high of number. The possibility is of an F 30. When I asked the owner to check it for me he said the machine was an F Cub. Now my books don't show that either but if it was a cub the serial number could work.

Could anyone enlighten me some before I go farther with this unit?

Thanks in advance.

John: Without knowing your experience with Farmall tractors, I don't want to sound condescending, but there is a great deal of difference between a F30 and a Cub. The roughest of measurements on such things as wheelbase, wheel width, tire size, radiator height, etc. should enable you to narrow your field of inquiry. As a starting point, the Cub is an offset tractor (engine is offset to the left of the driver's seat) and the F30 is a "straight" tractor.

Thanks to all for the information.

My experience with tractors is only fixing a couple I have run across over the years. I have some books that lay out the serial numbers and years but when they don't make sense I start to ask some questions.

I appreciate all your time and knowledge.

John: Glad to help--hopefully this gets another old Farmall out of storage and back to work! I'd love to know how you make out, if for no other reason than curiosity. After I replied to your message, my own curiosity got the best of me and I took a look at the Tractor Photos section at the left of the page with an eye toward F-30's. I'm quite familiar with the Cubs (and own one myself, along with an A and a Super C) but the F-30's are rather rare around here (Northern NY) and I wanted to refresh my memory.
