My F-20 is all back together and I have been trying to start it with no success. At first it kicked back on me and then I went and retarded the timing so it would fire just after TDC. Now all I get out of her is a chug every so often. It is firing on all cylinders as I have checked. There is no excess of gas coming out of the stack. Any ideas?

Try Autolite spark plugs if you are using Champions.

I would say it was timing. It should fire right before TDC. I would also check my valve timing make sure the intake and exhaust valve are opening and closing at the right time for that cylinder. This can be done by removing the rocker arm cover. Also check to see that the valves are set right.

Timing is important. After TDC is probably too late. TDC or just slightly ahead is gonna work better. I suggest following the book on timing the mag, then try again. Mine started right up with the crank after an engine rebuild. Because of the impulse on the mag, you can be advanced a bit, and the impulse will act as a retarder at cranking speed. If you are not sure of the timing, the pushing it to start may be a safe choice.

Sounds like you dont have it timed right.I dont know theexact procedure on the 20 but on my 14,you set the #1 piston at TDC,then wit hthe advance all the way retarted, set the mag at number one and line up the holes on the coupler and bolt it together.I think I ended up having to move mine bac kor foward on hole due to some wear on the mag or something.

This is just a guess but I've had to do it to other tractors that I have worked on, and thats to pull start it seems like after they have been worked on they don't like to start the first time

I used to start em all the hard way but anymore I am not too proud to use the belt. towing works too if you have a helper.
