I followed Mike Hanley's link (below) to Wiscon Historical Society site. Found many interesting pictures, tractor and otherwise. Looks like a prototype of the A in one picture (1937 I think), and on page 39 there is a woman on a B pulling a planter. The picture is in black & white but you can see that the starter and the headlight are a different color. They look to be painted black! I know the tractor is not new, but I would think new enough to not be repainted. Also the exhaust pipe is cut off very short. Also their is something sticking up on the right side of the grill. Looks like something my father would put there to sight over to get the rows straight.
Found most of the pictures on the 42 pages to be very interesting. Thanks to Mike H for taking the time to post us the link. Maybe those JD guys aren't all bad? Dave.

Dave, I'm guessing that tthat picture was taken sometime during the war. It was not uncommon for IH and other manufacturers to show women operating tractors and other farm equipment since there was a shortage of farm labor at that time. Also some of the wartime models came without lights or starter, and were added on by the dealer. These items were many times black, as they weren't painted with the rest of the tractor. The vertical rod is in all probability what you think it to be, a device to sight in the marker groove. Sighting the marker groove was not the easy to do on the A's or B's because of the offset position of the operator.

It's not a prototype, and yes, I do suspect that the lights were added after. Starters could go bad quickly. Muffler hight was pretty standard for those days- longer exiast pipes on top were out there, but shorter mufflers were more common-you'll see the same length muffler on H and Ms of that era- great for getting exhaust fumes in the face. Below should be a direct link to the photo.

I will retract my previous statement--don't think that's a prototype. As to the rod on the right side of the grille it could be a rod for row marking, as you say, but it does not appear to be directly in front of the operator, although perhaps it doesn't need to be, as it was probably used to make only the first pass. My dad had two B's in the 40's, and did not use a rod to sight on when planting or marking rows, as you could see the the front wheels (he used a single front for that purpose) and center them over the mark made by the marker on the back of the planter. I would guess that the starter and lights were installed after the tractor was put into use. Since Delco Remy made the same starter and lights for other manufacturers, it is logical (to me anyway) that they were painted black by Delco. When installed at the IH factory, they were painted red like everything else. Those are good pictures, thanks for posting them.

Pictures of prototypes often showed a different paint scheme than was on the production tractors. The original mufflers on all early letter series tractors had only a short extension on the muffler, the longer pipe came in the late 40's, I believe, not sure. Haven't seen the picture, but the other piece you mention could be the exhaust lift?
