A few years ago, I was getting ready to load up my H and go pulling, Our 1980 Ford F-350 ad a low battery, So ihad it on the charger for about an hour. I carried it out to the truck, hooked up the neg, cable, tightened it, then I set the pos cable on the post,,,, That is all I remember form there. My dad had found me laying in the drive way, and the truck on fire, I was lucky, just a few cuts and a few burns, I was less than 8 inches from my face when it went off. Was able to extinguish the truck and still go pulling, won 4 classes that weekend. Just thought I would share my experience with exploding batteries. I learned that when you charge a battery, it builds gasses inside, and when the tiny spark from the pos cable, (from the under hood light) ignited the gasses, and KABOOM!!! ChadS

I have always been told to hook and unhook the neg. last for this reason. My Dad also blew one up as it was sitting on the floor behind him while he was grinding something. He also was charging one on a 330U one time he unhooked the charger and reach across turned the key to start it and the battery blew only got acid on his clothes so he ran to the house told mom to give him the baking soda rubbed it in his clothes and only came out with 2 little holes.

Our Ag diesel teacher blew one up one day. He just got done telling us never to stick your head over the battery, especially when taking the jumper cables off and it blew. It sounded like a shotgun went off in the shop, top of the battery hit the rafters and the rafters are about 20 ft up there. Kinda makes you respect batterys.

You don't have to be an idiot to have an accident. I worked in a repair shop as a kid and the battery charging bench was next to the grinder bench. one morning I was useing the grinder and the sparks ignited the gasses from a battery that had been left to charge overnight. Ruined a good blanket lined jacket I was wearing. We moved the grinder.

I would agree with posts below. Did this to a 12 volt battery in a car one time, It was dead and I jump started it. After it was running I was cleaning around battery posts and arced it, was lucky that I jumped when it arced and didn't get it on my face or eyes. Believe it is the hydrogen produced when a battery is charging and a spark ignites it.

I noticed that is a 12 volt battery. This would lead me to believe that the cause of this explosion was not do to a 6v/12v jump-starting issue. More likely it was caused by someone charging a battery near an ignition source. Or possibly jumping a battery and not following the precautions you would normally use. You would be surprised at how few people actually follow all the precautions right to the letter. Most have just been lucky.

Looks like a hydrogen boom I've hooked 12 volt to 6 a lot of times but you never hook up the 6 volt last or unhook it first since the 12 volt will try to charge the 6 volt. Thats like you turn off the charger before unhooking the wires to the battery or you can get the same thing
