I recently purchased a F544 it steers fine but has a whine in the power steering supply line at high idle. Hytran level is good and have changed the filter twice. Could it be sucking air between pump and filter or something else? Thanks CJ

My I-544 make the same sound. It is a lot worse in the cold weather. I have no idea how to fix it. It is working so I am assuming it is not a major issue.

Thanks Gramps for the reply. The reason for asking is the tractor had a new clutch and TA installed before I bought it. I talked to the mechanic who did the work and he said just had trash in the filter and to change it 2 or 3 times which I did. After 2 filters still the same. The IH shop mechanic said it was sucking air and if I didn't fix it I would burn up the pump. So I wonder how good it was put back together after the TA. What scares me is all the silicone around tne pump mounting flange.

Well you investigated the problem much more then I did. I have a older gentleman that works on my tractor for me. He was working on them when they were new so I hope he knows what he is going.

He said they all do that, make that sound. All the bearings in my front end are worn and I guess when I replace them all, I will look into the steering pump.

The fact that mine is so much worse at colder temperatures, I can believe it has to do with the pump sucking in air as the hytran fluid is so much thicker in the cold.

One thing I have also noticed is that under no power, my steering pump is just about useless. I cannot turn my wheels at all. I have to go and move them by hand if needed.
