Red Rims?

My Father passed away recently and in his things I found a copy of the 31st edition ( 1946 ) of "The Red Tractor Book. Its a neat old book with specifications on most if not all tractors made in 1946. One of the advertisement pages by International Harvester shows a H Farmall with the typical farmer and dog all in full color. The tractor has red rims and muffler. In fact the only color other than red is the black tires , a black steering wheel and the decals . Since this is an offcial IH ad I'm wondering if some tractors came out with painted rims? Perhaps they were painted red during the war years?

It sounds like the picture was printed as a duotone, using only red and black ink, and the artist cut the mask for the red ink to fit everyting on the tractor. There wasn't much full color printing in 1946.

Your explaination makes sense to me. You look at the picture and it looks weird and then you notice the red rims. Thanks Bud

Some of the early photos/drawings IH released were of prototypes, or perhaps even an artist's drawing of the proposed tractor. Perhaps it is one of those pictures, although such an ad would be much more likely in 1939. Rims were galvanized and were never painted red, mufflers were never painted red, far as I know.

I don't know for sure, Bud, but it might just be that the advertisement was printed in two colors and the colors shown are not really true to the tractors themselves. Others will have a better idea, maybe. I don't recall that there was ever a red muffler. Sounds like a nice book to read and to own!
