Super forum set up here, what a wealth of info!!

I have had a problem for a number of years getting my 300u started in cold weather. I have just replaced the plugs, points, condensor, coil, and plug wires. I have converted her to 12 volts so she cranks over pretty good. She just doesn't want to fire when cold. I visited a local mechanic a few years ago when we had a big snow storm and I needed her to plow my driveway and told him about the problem. I was at my wits end because she just wouldn't fire. He said to dump some hot water on the manifold wait a minute and then crank. Came home and got a couple quarts of HOT water and followed his instructions and VOILA she started just like it was summer!! He said the carburater is an updraft and in the cold weather the fuel doesn't travel as well going uphill so heating the manifold up "tricks" the tractor into thinking it's warmer!!

Just used the same procedure a couple days ago and it worked again. Is there something else wrong with my tractor I should look at or is this something you other guys have to do in cold weather to get those "updraft" tractors started??

I keep an ether can handy but with good plugs and points mostly they start pretty good. Takes a good HOT spark to get that cold gas ignited.

So do I have suspected problem with my 300U if I have to do the hot water trick in cold temps to get the fuel to ignite or is this a normal procedure?? Just had to use again yesterday to plow more snow!! As I said just changed plugs, points, condenser, coil, and plug wires. Set points to .020 and plugs are Autolite 388. Previously had Autolite 3116. Which plug out there, any brand, would give the hottest spark for me?? Thanks!!

Another silly thing you may find is the choke will not close tight enough. Every little bit helps. I do like the hot water trick; it also fixes 460 carbs in real cold weather when they ice up.

I would get a heat lamp and clamp it where it is about a foot or so from manifold and warm it up that way. Tractor shed was too far from house to do the hot water thing.
