Is it supposed to be on fire?

As I was starting our 966 yesterday, I got a spark and ball of white smoke from the batteries. The rubber caps on the battery cables had worn through and as I started the tractor, there was a spark against the batteries lids and then a small fire. I got the fire out with no damage, but now I need those little rubber caps that fit over the terminals. Where can I find them?
Thanks

When I worked at Advance Auto we kept boxes of them under the counter because sometimes it was necessary to use individual caps instead of the big caps that covered 3 cells each.

How 'bout you go to the battery store and rob the caps off a couple of "core" batteries? You know, the ones you trade in when they won't crank anymore?

For a quick fix go to a tire shop and find a tube and cut a pice out and lay over the top of you batterys.

Been there-done that, a couple of times, on both the Cub and on the C. Used contact cement and pasted 2 layers of inner tube rubber (nicely cut and fit, I might add), both have worked fine for quite a while now. I used two layers because I could. Besides, the theory is that when one layer is worn through I'll be able to see that wear before the other layer wears thru and a short happens. Burns on my fingers I can tolerate, burns elsewhere - I'm not too sure about.

I think when you say "fire in the hole" it isn't supposed to be literal. I believe you can get the caps at automotive shops. Your terminals must run awful close to the top of the box. At leastit was close to the shop, had it been n the field you might have been looking for more than caps.
