I went to look at a 300 Farmall and the person that had the tractor was using a 12 volt battery to try starting it.Are they 6 or 12 volt and are they positive or negative ground.I have a 350 amd a 400 farmall and the 400 is negative ground , 12 volt and the 350 is positive ground, 12 volt and both are original. How can you tell if it is 6 or 12 volt?

You get 2 volts per cell. If it has 3 fill caps then it is 6 volt. 6 caps would be 12 volts.

I understand what a 6 volt and a 12 volt battery is but the question was , how can you tell what the electrical system is on the tractor and if it is a pos or neg ground? It doesn't have a battery in it!!!!!

If its got the original generator I would bet that it is positive. A alternator would be negative ground. Also the coil should have the + terminal wire to the distubutor if it is positive ground and the - terminal if negative.\

All the 300's and 400's I've been around have been 12 volt, but I'm not sure on the ground, it's positive on the letter series.

All 300's and 400's came out with 6 volt positive ground. 12 volt was not available until 350 and 450 series. I have a 350 gas of which I am the second owner, and it is 6 volt positive ground. The 350 and 450 could be ordered either way. The 350 Diesel was 12 volt from the factory.
