H hydraulic pump drive

I need to replace the seal on the input shaft on my hydraulic pump. Two questions:

1. Is the drive coupling LH or RH thread? Seems like it ought to be LH, but I can't tell for sure.

2. How do you hold the shaft to loosen that coupling nut? (I have the unit out of the tractor, but am trying to avoid complete disassembly.)

What I do is put a piece of strap (1/8" x 3/4" x whatever) into the oil intake opening and wedge that between the gears to prevent them from rotating. Then, with a soft drift on the lip of the slot of the end-part of the coupling, give it a couple of whacks to drive the coupling counter-clockwise off the shaft.

I must admit, using the oil to put up the resistence sounds a little kinder to the gears than wedging a piece of steel in there but that's what a couple of the manuals say to do.

The pump shaft coupleing is right hand thread, just put in new seals last month. If you have a spare coupleing shaft you can cut off one end and weld it to socket and use a impact wrench.

I had to do the exact same thing to my '41 H. I talked to someone, and it makes sense. You drop the pump out(easier to work on)and fill it back up with oil. Find a square key to fit snuggly into the slot. Weld a nut on the end of prety good size. You get an air wrench, have full PSI, with the right size socket on the end, and give it sudden jults. I had to go over to a blacksmith with a better air wrench to get enough speed and power faster. The oil in the reservoir will act as a brake to slow the inside down so it can be broken loose. Try taking a good solid punch , a fairly heavy hammer , putting the end of the punch on the out side of the slot and hit it . You are right , it is a left hand thread . Good luck .

NO NO NO; It is right hand thread.
Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.
Take the pump out of the tractor, remove the capscrews that hold the pump housing in place, put a flat piece of metal into the pump gears and turn the coupling nut LEFT to remove!!!
It will tighten by itlesf when the tractor turns the pump against pressure.

I have had good luck just striking the coupler with a brass hammer in the counter clokewise direction. It is right hand threads.
