I'm in the process of restoring my 400. The factory cigarette lighter is junk and I need to replace it. I highly doubt that an original can be located, so what have other guys used for a close match that won't look too stupid?

Thanks

Bill: I think I would be tempted to find a plug for the hole where lighter goes. Lighter probably wouldn't be to bad if you don't hook it up. In late June of 1955 my dad was baling hay with a new 300. Even then lighter was rusted, just in the short while since tractor was built. My dad never used the lighter. My dad was off tractor talking with a field visitor. A travelling companion of visitor wanted a light. No one had a light for him. My dad said, "there is a lighter on tractor, help yourself." After they left my dad started baling again, in less than 2 minutes tractor stopped. The user had pushed lighter all the way in after using, it stuck, burned all the wires off under dash, including ign switch and amp gauge. My dad was left standing in middle of field with 3,000 bales of hay to bale and a tractor that wouldn't go. Needless to say every new tractor that came to our farm after that, had the lighter supply wire cut the day the tractor was delivered. Just one of those things that never worked until the era of the cab.

Bill

For my farmall 300 I was able to find an exact replacement in my local wrecking yard. It was 6 - volt and came out of a 400 that had been sitting outside for a long time. The interesting part was that the entire receptacle portion could be completely disassembled for cleaning. Once the pieces were cleaned up with steel wool and the wire was fixed it worked fine.

Totally unnecessary, I know, but fun to return everything to working order.

Enjoy!
