Alternator or Generator?

Am I correct in thinking a 1954 Super C would have come from the factory with a generator, and not an alternator. If the generator has been discarded can you still buy a rebuilt or reconditioned one, and are they really expensive?

Thanks in advance, I'm thinking of starting another project, and I'm wondering about the cost of putting the old girl back to original.

Also, don't share any of this information with my wife, I don't have my current project out of the shop yet.

The Super C would have a generator. You can probably get one from NAPA without a core but it will cost a little more. You could also try the salvage yard and have an old one rewound for 12V. You will need a regulator either way to go with the generator, TISCO has them. And if you change to back six volts you will need a new battery.

Dave,
Thanks, you brought up something I didn't even think of. If it has an alternator, its been switched over to 12 volt.

SGT K - If your SC was converted to 12 volts and you are converting back to 6 volts don't forget to check the ignition coil: If a ballast resistor was installed in series with the original 6 volt coil, the resistor will need to be removed. Or if a self-ballasted coil (a so-called "12 volt" coil) was put on, it will need to be replaced with a 6 volt coil.

Also if your SC has lights the bulbs will need to be changed too!

I agree that it would have had a generator on it from the factory. I'm sure you can find a good used or rebuilt one at a salvage yard.
If I remember right, they were Delco's and Delco must have made them by the millions, you can find similar, if not identical, generators on many makes of cars, trucks & tractors of that era.
