Local used implement dealer has 656 Hydro for sale. He wants 1900 for it. It has light fire damage(guages are gone, I assume wiring is shot, sheetmetal above dash is gone. He guarantees hydro works, motor is loose or money back. Its 2 pt hitch, tires are fair. Seat is shot, but sheet metal is pretty straight.
How does that price seem? what would it be worth fixed up?

Jim: 656 was a fine tractor, probably one of the best IH ever built. This one however has a lot against it; fire, gas engine and hydro. From what you describe I see nothing more than a parts tractor.

656 diesel gear drive probably was one of the most efficient tractors ever built, in terms of fuel, durability, etc. A gasser in a hydro is probably the most inefficient tractor ever built. I was farming back when these tractors were new. I looked at one as a possible loader, haybine, drilling, spraying and planting tractor. I talked with several owners, and remember these tractors were all less than 3 years old then. Some of the comments I received were, they will drive you to poor house, gutless wonder, good way to burn excess oil, etc. I didn't buy one and was never sorry. I did buy a gear drive diesel, and for the first 10,000 hours repairs were almost nil. (less than $500.)

Hugh,

A perfect assesment of the 656.

I personally feel that anything of IH's 50HP and up tractors is a gasoline black hole. Their fill time is measured in hours whereby the diesels are measured in days.

Just my opinion,

Allan

Allen: I wouldn't argue with that one.

Tractor should be worth it. Take a little time and get it started and warm it up and see how it works. I bought two 656's about 2 years ago, one standard and one hydro, both diesels. I've sold the standard shift now but we used it under an f-11 for several months with no problem except starting in cold weather. The hydro is a 3,000 hour tractor and had worn a tree/shrub digger all its life at a nursery. It had no 3 point but was well cared for. I am hoping to put it to work hooked to a haybine. I think the adjustable speed will be real nice in varying crops to always keep all the crop going through machine as it will cut.

We had a 656 hydro gas a few years back. Had a Farmhand F11 loader on it - best dang loader tractor I've ever run!

Be aware that the gas engine is very thirsty with the hydro, used about twice as much fuel feeding as our 1256 diesel does now.

If the hydro works and the engine will run, then I would say $1900 is fair. Did the fire get hot enough to melt the tires? If it melted the tires there could be internal problems...

I think F-11 is probably best all-around farm loader ever built.

They make exellent hay or loader tractors. If you are looking for one, I have a diesel with factory wide front and 2 point that I am thinking of moving.
