I am having trouble geting the driven steering gear off the shaft to the wheels. Are there any tricks to it or was it just a bad monday. Looks to be pressed onto some splines on top of the shaft. I do not have any of the bottom off, I don't know if thats what I'm missing. I am new to this and still learing any help would be great!

As Larry said loosen the nut ot the top of the shaft so you don't damage the threads put a block of steel I have done this many times on top of the nut and get a biiiii g hammer and don't spair the hammer. I have had to get up on top of the tractor with 16Lbs slage hammer and I meen use it to get some loose.

Zach,

Assuming you have the worm gear out and this is a narrow front tractor, this is the way I did it on my H. First I jacked the front of the tractor off the ground an inch or so. Then I loosened the nut on top of the sector gear so the top of the nut covered all the threads on the spindle. Put a block of hardwood over the nut and whack it a couple of times with a big hammer. This will loosen the gear most of the time. Let the tractor down on the ground and remove the nut. Now you can lift the sector gear off. Hope this helps.

Larry

Zach; I have found a trick(sort of), but it has helped many times. Basically after taking the grill off, lift the front of the tractor up 5-6". If you have a narrow front end, leave it on, but you WILL have to take off the wide front if you have it. Then after you remove the sector(steering) gear nut, just give the shaft a few whacks with a sledge hammer. Hit the shaft in the exposed area between the bolster and the steering gear housing. Don't try to pound too hard. Most times the shaft will drop after 1-3 hits. If after 10 hits you get no response put a prybar at the bottom of the shaft where the post bolts on and pry as you hit it a couple of times. But 85% of the shafts come out with 1-3 hits. I should know because I've helped tear apart quite a few tractors for this salvage yard.

Everybody else probably gets tired of my showing off these pictures, but if you haven't seen 'em, here's how I did it.
