Needing some questions answered on a M&W 9 Speed Lever type transmission. I bought a parts tractor for the nine speed and once I removed the top plate, I saw that the fork was not over the shifting lever that engages the 9 speed. I removed the outer lever so I could move the fork around th plase the "dog leg" shifter into the fork. This wasn't my problem however the dog leg will move back and forth properly shifting in and out of the 9 speed but the dog leg has vertical movement that allows for it to not stay up on the engaging gear. My question is there a peace that is supose to hold the dog leg up into the fork so it doesn't have the vertical movement? PLEASE HELP! Thanks in advance.

I just helped a friend work on his 9spd..... ...The "U" shaped steel that does the shifting was supported on the opposite side of the level by a pin, washers, and two cotter pins on his. So intern this held the side the handle is attached too up as well. I believe this is what your talking about. If you need anymore help let me know..... ..... .Alot of people have 9spds on the net but we couldn't find anyone who worked on them..... ..... He asked me to help and we got it figured out.

You are right on the money. It seems that there is play on the opisite side by the reverse idler gear. What did you do pull the pin that held the shifter leg (dog leg) and shim it up with washers to keep it from moving vertically?

Actually, his wore the lower tranny shaft in the front and it had to be built up with weld and turned down..... ..... .It had the washers under it already when we took it apart. That is what I'd do with yours though.
