difference between the A and 100

I just bought a 1946? A ( its not the super A ) for parts. It got loose from previous owner and went sailing down hill only to be stopped by a tree. Cracked the front axle, rear houseing, bented up the rear rim. Body wasnt the best to begin with. It does have a good engine and some misc parts. My question is, whats the difference between the A and 100? Were the engines the same? does sheet metal from the A fit the 100? Implements the same? Will the engine in my 1946 A bolt into a 100 if I find a 100 in need of the engine? If I have the chance to buy a 100 should I opt for this instead of the A?? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Ron,
I just aquired an A with a bad engine (block cracked beyond repair), and am only looking for specific parts from it. I was going to part it out, contact me if interested, good front end, rear end, and more. You mentioned yours are busted up.

Ron: While the A was one of the predcessors of the 100, there are some differences. The A has a C-113 engine with thermosyphon cooling while the 100 has a C-123 engine with a water pump cooling. The engines however will bolt up to each other. The A was produced from 1939 to 1947, from then until 1954 it became the Super A with hydraulics. In early 1953 the block was changed to acomodate the larger sleeves and pistons used in the C-123 engine. However until late 1954 they used a thicker sleeve and continued to build it as a C-113 engine and still thermosyphon.

The 100 followed in 1954 with some other major changes. Sheet metal was completely changed, brakes were changed, fast hitch became an option, water pump was also added. It had also been installed on the last 1,957 Super A's With the 100 they also started using larger tires. All A's were mag ignition from factory, whereas most Super A's, 100's and the 130 that followed were distributor ignition. The single biggest reason you can't use the A engine on any of the later tractors is there is no place to mount the hydraulic pump on the A block. The block is not drilled for it.

A (plain old A, not Super A), has a different motor than a 100, (A has a C-113 engine, 100 Has a C-123 engine, same as Super C). The Plain A has the same engine as a Super A 'cept the Super has a spot on the right side (below the distributor) for the engine mounted hydro pump, Gear driven off the cam shaft main gear, which powers the hydro pack, (under the fuel tank, double rockshaft arms) which lift implements. The Plain ol' A doesn't have the hydro lift, and thus would not interchange implements with the 100, other than drawbar mounted implements. Sheet metal will be different too. 100 has larger radiator, and water pump, A did not have water pump, and uses a smaller radiator. In short, the A does not compare to the 100, as well as a Super A, but then not exaclty either. The later Super A, dubbed the Super A-1, got the larger C-123 engine..... . Clear as mud?
