It sounds normal. Try holding the glow plugs after it starts for awhile. Our 560 does the same thing.

That's normal. Just hold the glow plugs on until the smoke clears up. You should also try holding the glow plugs on for at least one minute before starting. Your D-188 is basically just the four-cylinder version of the D-236 and D-282 six-cylinders. Just ask anyone who has owned a 460, 560, 660, 606, early 706, or 656 Diesel, they'll tell you that proper use of the glow plugs makes a world of difference in starting.

Started my 460 one time and a neighbor driving by came flying down the drive way he thought the shed was on fire.

I don't think you have a problem Tim. The diesel is not yet warmed up even with glow plugs to fully combust all of the fuel going through it, by the time it has run for a minute or two it is beginning to become efficient with the fuel and after a good warm up it exhibits no unusual smoke. I started my 584 today to blow snow at about -15* and it belches black smoke as it begins to start, when I let off on the extra fuel it smokes less, then as the cylinders warm up the smoke goes white and in a few seconds there is only the exhaust and vapour of a normal engine..my B250 does the same..nothing unusual about your diesel tractor, especially in cold weather...Mike in Exeter Ontario

My (non-IH) diesel does the same. Before it fires it fills the shed with perfectly mixed unburned diesel. I always think of the fuel/air bomb I saw demonstrated on Nova a few years ago. Wm

He is talking about after it starts these are low compression diesel engines my 460D which I have owned for almost 30 years has always started on 4 cyl. then progressed to all 6 they are a very smooth running engine once they are hitting on all cyl. and a very efficient eng. I can pull a 7 ft offset plow on 2 1/4 gal an hour or left and right hay rakes on 1/2 gal an hour.
