Injection pump on Diesil M.D

Started to service the old M.D. In the manual It says to add oil to the pump if need be by cracking the oil cock valve on the pump and seeing if oil comes out. Well on My 1948 M.D The oil filler is to the front of the pump unlike the one in the book that shows it to the rear. When I cracked the cock valve it appears that diesil fuel comes out of it instead of oil. Wondering what is up with that? Never having checked the oil level before I would assume oil(same as in the engine)would have come out of the check level cock because it says to add oil. Any help much appreciated----- ---

John, I had my injector pump on my MD rebuilt by a diesel injector pump company like someone else said. Mine also leaks. It seems to be the worst if I fill the tank all the way full like I did last winter. I shut off the supply valve under the tank, but I think when the tank is full, fuel is above the return line creating is some head pressure there. Roger

M.D.puller, thanks for the info. So basically your saying to just drain the fuel out of the pump and then fill her with 30 wt. oil every few times I run her??? Do you notice a difference in the way she'll run or is it just to prevent damage? It'd be nice to find the part to fix it.

If you are getting diesel fuel out of the sump on the pump, there is a leak someplace inside the pump. My manual shows the cock valve at the front of the pump.

Hass, Is your oil fill for the sump located on the front of the pump or the rear. Mine is located in the front whereas the manual show the fill at rear. What is the possible fix for this problem? Any idea what problem the fuel in the pump will cause?

Have the same problem on my wd6, had the pump rebuilt professionally and it still leaked, removed and sent pump back many times, still leaked. Pretty tough to find a pump that doesn't leak at least a little.

To fix, the pump will have to be dissassembled and seals replace. May need other work too. Probably best to have the pump rebuilt professionally, although that is expensive. As to damage, the diesel will not give as good a lubrication as the oil, so you will get more wear. If you aren't using the tractor much, if you drain an refill with oil fairly often, it will likely last a long time. Need to watch the crankcase oil level also to make sure that diesel is not leaking into it. It only takes a cup of oil to refill the injection pump, just up to the level of the petcock. My fill port is on the rear of the pump. Seems strange your fill port is on the front of the pump, as my manual shows the fill on the rear for both the IH and the Bosch pumps.
