To Drain or not to Drain

I have heard several times about those who are not intending to use their tractors during the winter months draining the system of coolant. Is this neccessary or is it just a holdover from the days when just water was used without any antifreeze and there was the danger of freezing damage? It seems to me that the coolant is designed to help protect the inner workings of the engine. Am I wrong to leave it in or should I in fact be draining it out for the winter?

Its a holdover from the days when the only thing avalible to prevent freezing was alcohol.Never let an internal combustion engine sit idle for any period of time without a 50/50% mixture of coolant/antifreeze.This product is not very expensive and I drain flush and refill my tractor with new fluid every 2 years in use or not.Paul.

If you have antifreeze in it you need to test it with a antifreeze tester you can get at a local auto parts house. They wiil tell you how to use it if your not sure. If it test ok leave it in but always mix the antifreeze with water 50/50 or theres danger of it freezing and busting the block!!!! NEVER leave JUST water in one over the winter!!! The antifreeze will act as a rust inhibitor too help keep it from rusting inside internally. Hope this helps
