I know what you are saying, but the sad part of it is if the restoration was done well and a lot of parts were needed this individual really isn't making much.

The first rule of sales: You can't get it if you don't ask for it. Rule # 2: You can always go down on price, but going up just makes you look stupid.

I traveled an hour each way to look at a nice $5,200 (confirmed price prior to travel) tractor that I would have bought on the spot if the guy hadn't jumped the price $600 when we met in person. I'll never, ever do business with him again. Just my 2 cents

probably just trying to get his money and time back out of it.if you take in to concideration what he probably spent on it,assuming he did all that he said he did, that would be about right.I have close to ten thousand in one of my Ms,and thats in engine tranny and new tires, two rear rims, one front and the PPG paint!(Not counting the time and gas I spent getting parts, and my labor. Some of those tranny bearings are high,no matter who they come from.)Would I pay that for an M,nope!

In danger of offending everyone- anyone who would pay that much for an M needs to anaylze their economic decision making skills-250000 made. I could run an ad in the local paper( to buy an M) and get probabbly 5-10 responses. 1000 dollar tractor-not counting restoring. 2500 tops in restored condition, but if the guy can get it more power to him. Anybody who buys at that price has more money than sense. supply =demand though

Stewart: As others have said, we are not sure of his motives. I will throw another in. I have a friend who professionally restores tractors for other people. He has done close to 60 Farmalls for one customer. The customer has substancially more than 60 restored Farmalls, so my friend didn't get to do all of them. He tells me the average H, M, 300, 400, etc. is costing $10,000. Can. which today is $7,700. US money. That includes a cost of buying the tractor for restoration.

As we all know this hobby is not much of a money maker, doubt if it ever will be, but just may be some people would like to see it that way. So the guy could be an excentric millionaire wanting to tantilize us. Don't let him bother you, guys, for the time being he falls in the same catergory as the guy who would bash a tractor that sold 250,000 copies when new. Every once in a while these guys let us know just how much of an idiot they really are.

Hugh:

By any chance is he in Debert and is it Owen he does them for or Owen's brother?

if it is the same guy, I have seen some of his work and it is outstanding. In fact I have seen some of the parts he actually makes for implements and stuff - identical to the real thing!

With luck, he will convince Owen and his brother to come to CubFest Northeast 2004 in June... hope you can come too.

Just curious, but that is at least the second time I have heard you use a reference to "bashers" and "bashing". Not trying to start a fight, but what exactly is that? Certainly you are not talking about the good natured red vs. green ribbing that goes on in this forum and at shows, auctions, etc all across the country? Those guys are just having fun with each other. I'm a Farmall guy and I take a lot of ribbing from green and vice versa. We both realize that there are great tractors in either color. What's up with the bashing and why is it such a problem?
Just curious...no harm intended.

Dave: I have no problem with these light hearted jabs guys take at one another. Those do tend to work better in person as you can better gauge the other guys reaction. On here that is a bit more difficult. I guess the guys I get a bit annoyed with are the guys getting downright nasty, and you can tell by their input they know little or nothing about the subject.

Just for example a guy last week called the Farmall M worst tractor ever built. Could the buyers of 300,000 new Farmall M's have been wrong.

I have to agree. That is simply an ignorant statement. 300,000 M's sold with a huge number still serving in some capacity speaks for itself.
I own and farm with one myself. Thanks for the clarification....I enjoy ribbing the JD guys at the auctions and shows. You do have to watch your step, though. I once dickered long and hard with a guy to buy an old JD #5 mower to cut hay with. Finally settled on $30. I paid the man, told him what a great mower it was and then commented on how great it was gonna look painted red. For half a minute I thought he and his buddies were gonna lynch me, but it turned out to be a good joke on both sides.

Dave: I have a friend who owns one of the last steel threshers built by IH. This machine is a big unit, selffeeder with band cutters. This machine had been his uncles machine when new. He told me the last year his uncle used it they had traded all their tractors with belt pullies and for a new 656D, 504 gas and a new 205 combine. Combine didn't come. IH dealer found a pulley for 656 and his uncle pulled a wagon of sheaves up on each side and put the 4 most able men he could find pitching in. 656 just purred with it.

Since he has restored the thresher on threshing days they have used an assortment of tractors JD-R, JD-70, Cockshutt 40 and a WD9. Each year the guys try and get 2 wagon loads of sheaves in there. Trouble today, is find 4 men in good enough shape to work the thresher and tractor. Most of the participants are 60+. Usually the guys pitching sheaves suffer more verbal abuse than tractors. They have another threshing crew, small machine with Farmall H, guy feeding the thresher is near 90, he insists the entire crew chew tobacco. He usually has one or two stomach casualties, and gives them a lot of heat. Once when he was threshing he noticed a lady he knew bent over picking up something from ground. He yelled," Mary go home and put your pants on." The speed with which Mary straightned up, you would have sworn her dress was over her back.

Yes the inter action at these shows is great. Without humour it wouldn't be the same. I find that awfully hard to read here on forums. I seem to regularly get myself in trouble about once a month, saying something I shouldn't. A lot of forum participants are quite serious.

I've had my run-ins with the "serious" types too. Met the guy who sold me my M on this site. He was an older, middle Illinois churchman who always had something caustic on his lips...usually wrapped around a biblical citation. He even went so far as to calculate my average drive speed when I came to inspect the tractor and then lectured me on Illinois traffic law. You have to cut them some slack, they don't know any better.
On the other hand...he made sure I knew what I was doing before he turned the tractor over! I guess that's what makes a site like this so good.
Lot's of different kinds of people with one common interest. Could do without the ads for $8000 M's, though.

Sounds a little high, but its his tractor and more power to him if he gets it. Doubtfull, but worth a shot. I agree, mommy probably told him to sell it and he doesn't want to. Done it myself a time or too. High prices holds her off for a little while anyway.

I think he's looking for an offer from Africa or somewhere in that area. They seem to want to pay more than the equipments worth. This way he'll get to keep the M also..... .....

That is a nice M, but I saw it's twin sell for $2850 at an auction in Ohio last summer....only Super M. I know exactly what this guy would tell me if I asked about his price because I have been looking for a second MTA the past few months and they ALL have the same story. They buy the tractor for a price and they expect to make a profit on that price. Then they paint it and add a few accessories. They then expect to be reimbursed at least dollar for dollar on those.
Frankly, if you have ever sold anything in the real market you know it doesn't really work that way. Rarely can you pull it off. You can point that out to the guy, but he'll tell you that if he can't get at least that out of it....well...."I'll just let her set right thar".

Stewart, If that pic is any indication, It looks to be Show quality. I do belive it is a tad bit over priced. Or he has a Ex-wife forceing him it sell, so he has overpriced it so it won't sell! Just a thought.
OBTW....How is your SMTA--LP project comming?
I should be getting some new info hopefully in a month I hope. Call me some time and we will visit.
Later, John A

Either the guy spent a ton on restoration or it has sentimental value or both.

Restoration gets mighty spendy when you have to hire the work out.
