I have a MD engine and a WD6 engine all apart in my garage. As I put one back together I'm seeing little differences. The one out of a MD has bigger counter weights on the crank and bigger rod bolts. I can't use it because it has already been ground .030 and wore out again but since it looks heavier and had the bigger rod bolts would it have been a better crank? Is this just a case of one being newer or is it because one was a MD and the other a WD6? I know the Wd6 is a 1948. Don't know what the MD was.

They should be the same. you can stroke that old crank. Or you could have it brought back to normal if you get desperate.

If they were manufactured in the same year they would both be the same but IH had a habit of what they termed field improvement and that was to improve as they saw fit, year by year,in some cases month by month,if they saw an improvement was warranted it would be done.
