I was reading the string below about which oil is prefered and it reminded me that someone suggested Marvel Mystery Oil at the recomended strength to help keep the inside of your engine clean. What are your opinions?

GT: So, what's wrong with just buying the proper or good quality oil. As Jed said all oils contain additives, so do all fuels, hydraulic oils, gear oils, antifreeze, etc. There is only one additive I know of that cant be added at time of manufacture. That is methyl hydrate to fuel as it will just evaporate. Same with your windshield washer after a long spell of not using, the methyl hydrate has evaporated.

Hey guys, I have got news for you. All motor oils contain additives. I run an R&D lab and we develop formulas for the major oil companies to establish treat rates. Base oil plus additives is equal to what you dump in your engine. Every oil out there is additized.

Use good oil and change often and the inside of your engine should stay pretty clean. Marvel Mystery oil has many supporters, however I am concerned about the changes in your motor oil that the marvel mystery oil might cause. It might effect the properties of motor in some negative way. Modern oils need no additives.

Thanks, the place that I got the info was the Cub Cadet discussion group. They were refering to the smaller Kohler engines. It would kinda be overkill anyway on my 400LP. I am always amazed that a 1956 engine can be as clean as it is.

On those Kohler engines, they have a history of exhaust valve problems. They run very hot and tend to stick in the open position. One of the ways to control it is with Marvel Mystery Oil. Not just in the crankcase, but also some in the fuel. Works like a charm too. Very different animal from the engine on a tractor.

On your 400LP, you probably wouldn't have much need for it, since LP burns so clean anyway.

Well said, Ben! If the oil you are using requires an additive, there is something wrong with the oil in the first place. Many additives actually are counter-productive; they just don't work with the balanced additive packages that are already blended into today's modern oils.

Think you can form your own opinion, instead of regurgitating what everybody else spews?

Try it, clown...
