Ive am getting on old M this spring and it has not ran in at least 2 years if not longer. The motor is loose. Is there any precautions I should take when I look to start it. I also have a problem with water in the rear end and I know its froze is there anything I should do to keep the houseing from cracking when it starts to thaw? Also once I get the water drained is there anything I should look at or check other then adding new oil.

I would pull the plugs, squirt oil in and let her sit a bit with the plugs loosely back in. Roll her over one complete rev with handcrank w/o rotor to ensure a valve isn't stuck. Then, before starting up, pull the plugs and crank her w/o distr cap to get oil pump to lube the galleys and bearings as they have drained and are dry. I drained about 3 gallons of water from my rear axle when changing fluid. It takes a lot of oil to fill the rear end. I flooded the top pan indentations with penetrating oil to get it worked down into the bolts for future use. Also might want to check for debris (cobwebs, ratsnests, etc) in intake track so you don't suck in bad stuff.

I am working on an I4 that had a few gallons of water in the rear end. All the bearings were corroded and need replacing. There was also surface rust on the gears and other areas that needed to be cleaned off. I would take the top off and have a good look before using it much.

I would pull the valve cover & pour some 30 weight oil over the rocker arm assembly because it will take some time before oil gets up that high in the engine.

Old has good idea. Take plugs out, squirt a little oil in, roll the engine over a few times with plugs out, and then put plugs back in. This will lube up the cylinder walls and get some oil on those dry rings. Also, I would drain the old gas out and add new. Check all fluids, and you will most likely have to charge battery. Do a spark test right off the bat, no need to fight trying to start it if you don't have spark. You only have to worry about things breaking when the water freezes, not when the ice thaws. By all means, pull the plug and drain that water out of the rear end. If it has sat, the water will be at the bottom with the oil on top of it. Drain atleast untill pure oil comes out. Those rear ends were natorious for getteing water in them through the bolt holes in the plateform, water stands in the indentions and slowly leaks around the bolts when setting outside in the rain. You may chose to drain it all out and add new oil. Might be a good idea to completely change all fluids. Not only because of the fact that it has sat for 2 years but also because you don't know when the last time they were changed before that.

Thanks for the information. I am planning on changeing all fluids this spring. The water in the rear end is what bothered me the most because there is enough that I cant rock or move the tractor.

It doesn't take much water in the rear end to prevent it from moving, a couple inches in the bottom will do it. Next spring when it warms up, pull the plug and see how much water comes out before the grease starts coming out. If it's only a couple gallons, you're probably ok.

I you can I'd put some oil in the cylinders for right now to help keep it loose and lube up the rings for this spring and also if you get a warm day drain the water out
