I thought it was posted here somewhere but I can't find it. Is there a way to tell a 6 volt regulator from a twelve volt reg if they are in your hand and off the tractor. Bought a new one at a yardsale, International box and all but there's not a clue to be found on the case anywhere. Thanks for any help. Dick in Vermont.

Bart - Good chance if the regulator is NOT marked with a voltage it is a 6 volt unit.

You can test like this: Take the cover off the regulator and determine which relay inside is the cutout. It'll be the one wound with two coils together on the same magnet spool - one wound with fine wire and the other with a few turns of heavy wire. Now take the regulator and using 12 volts from your car battery (with the engine off), connect the regulator BAT terminal to battery +, then ground the regulator frame. If the cutout relay does nothing when you make the connection you have a 12 volt regulator. If the cutout "pulls in" (it's contacts close) you have a 6 volt regulator.

Thanks for the quick and great reply. I couldn,t find a rating on that regulator anywhere which I thought was unusual. I'll go try to test it. Supposed to be minus 20 t0 30 below here in Northern Vermont tonight. Stay near the stove and Thanks again.

I think brand new ones have it stamped right on them someplace. Also indicates whether it is for a positive grounded or negative grounded system. Not sure how long yours has been laying around, but the older ones may not of been stamped. If you got the original international box that it came in, you might see if you can find a part number on it someplace. You might be able to trace what it is that way.

Should have 6-v or 6 volt stamped on the bottom, or sometimes on the cover.
