We have recently acquired a C with sluggish hydraulics. The fluid is a butterscotch color which we believe is a sign of water in the fluid. We assume that we need to purge the system instaed of merely drain it. What is the best way to do this? How much fluid does the C need?

It is in the neighborhood of 3 quarts, give or take a little. You may want to replace the oil and run it a little. Then drain and re-fill it a second time. You may be able to break the lines on the inlet/outlet of the pump but you still will probably leave some old oil in there. When you fill it the hyraulic levers are supposed to be in the "back" postion. If I rememeber right you fill it to about 1/2" below the fill plug. If you do drain the oil out of the pump you may have to prime the pump by cracking a fitting on the outlet of the pump to get it to start pumping again. I guess this is why I would just change the oil twice.

There is a screen on the lower side of the box. It is attached with 4 bolts (take a 1/2" wrench) Take that screen out and clean it also.

If the unit is warm, make sure you loosen the fill plug BEFORE removing the drain plug. Those units are not vented and you would be amazed at how quickly you can recieve a hydraulic oil bath pulling the drain plug first. Don't ask me how I know!

I'll bet you found out the same that I did. No matter how hard you try you can not get that plug back in before you get that bath.
