I have a IH986 tractor on the farm that my grandad used for farming. I have been told that it was running well the last time it was used. I tried cranking it over but the batteries might be old and tired. What size battery should be in there. It has two batteries installed and they might be two small to be of good use. ?? Trying to get the old girl started to see what I have ?? It is in south texas so the coldest it gets here lately is around 40 degrees. Does that make a big difference in batteries, glow plugs ?

Hi Jorge, for cold start, push the throtlle lever all the way up, start the engine, when the engine fire, pull to the idle. Check before if the lever move freely. A guy near home, in winter, push the lever on his 986, start the engine, when he try to pull to idle, the cable broke and he can stop the engine. The engine goes to full rpm then BANG!!! I dont want to seem stupid, but I take it that I can just call my local auto zone and pick up two of these batteries ? What is a group 24 and group 27 battery? Is this how many cells are in the battery. I understand about getting the most CCA for starting.?

A 12 V lead acid battery has 6 cells. A group 27 battery is physically longer than a group 24 (approx 13" vs 11"). If your local auto parts store only has group 24 size batteries, it could be okay. Batteries today put out more power than they did 25 years ago. At least they are rated higher.

Group size is the physical size of the battery. 86 series tractors have two 12-volt batteries connected in parallel. With this setup, if each 12-volt battery has 500 CCA, you get an output of 12 volts and 1000 CCA. 06, 26, 56, and 66 series diesels had two 6-volt batteries connected in series. This way, total output would be 12 volts, but the CCA's would stay the same. The advantage of this setup is more reserve power. You need to take your old batteries in for recycling when you get new ones anyway, so just have them give you the same thing as you have now, hook them up the same way as the old ones were, and you should be fine. A 986 should start no problem on a 40 degree day if it has a block heater or a tank heater. If not, give it a shot of ether. This engine does not have glow plugs. If new batteries don't solve your problem, post back for more help.
