TD-14A - Magneto or Battery Ignition

I have purchased an IHC TD-14a that has been sitting in the weeds for approximately 10 years. Everything is fine - no sign of water in the cylinders or crankcase, no gumming in the fuel system. One problem --there's no magneto or battery ignition system. There's no key switch on the panel and a wire hanging down from the intake manifold. The owner doesn't know when it was removed. The 12-volt generator is in great shape. Is there any advantage of a magneto over a bettery ignition system (or vice versa).

I am a newbie to the world of vintage iron, so I certainly would appreciate any help you can give.

With thanks in advance,

Before you make the battery/magneto choice, you need to determine is what intake manifold you have. The ignition is switched on and off by a switch in the intake manifold that kills the ignition when you are running on diesel. If the manifold switch has one terminal, it should short to ground when on diesel -- it's for a magneto. If it has two terminals and opens the circuit when on diesel, it's for a battery ignition. Having said that, though, given the choice I'll take a magneto every time. No matter what the battery state of charge is the mag will fire. If the day comes when the battery is dead and you have to bump start it, you'll be glad you had that option. Just my $.02 -- Brian

definately get the dist over the magneto unless you can get a working mag for cheap. I have much better luck starting these things consistently with dist/coil setup. -Greg

I dont know, Ive been hit with a Hi output electronic ignition on a performance car, and Ive been hit by a magneto, and the magneto definetly hits hard, it knocked me over, while the coil ignition just scared me a little.

Id say magneto, think about it, 1 wire going to the ground switch, everthing else is right there in the magneto. No coils to lose power/leak...looks cleaner to me.

David:
The TD stands for Tractor Diesel. The TD14A came out after the TD14 in the early 50's I believe. You are correct in that it starts on gas and when warm you switch it over to diesel by throwing forward a lever that is in the upper left hand corner of the vertical instrument in front of you.
The tractor will need a magneto or distributor in order to start the gas part of the engine. I believe, if I remember correctly that the TD14A was equipped with a distributor. Call Associated
Tractor Service in Stockton, CA at 800-735-1301 and ask for Tom. He can help you with parts and advice. If he is not there ask for Harvey. He is
the service manager. Both He and Tom know those tractors inside and out. Plus they are good people. Tell Tom that Dale told you to call. I would also suggest that you buy a set of manuals
for the TD14A. You should have a Service Manual, an Operator's Manual and a Parts Catalogue. The best source of original International Harvestor Manuals is Binder Books in Tigard, Oregon. Their
phone number is 503-684-2024. If I can be of any further help just E'mail me. Take care of that TD14A. The TD14 and its successor the TD14A may be the best crawler that International ever made.
And that's out of all the crawler tractors that International made. It was a great tractor. Keep me posted on how you are doing. By the way, I live in Livermore and grew up in Fresno. My Dad
worked for International and International dealers
as a parts man and manager for many years. I grew
up with International. In fact I have a picture of him standing in front of a TD14. If I am ever coming your way I will try to find your phone number and give you a call. If both of our schedules allow maybe I could stop by and see your
TD14A.

I would install a battery ignition, they are easy and cheap to find and give more power to the plugs. It's not like you will be hand cranking it with no battery.

TD stands for Track Diesel. Because it is diesel you will not have an ignition system.

The TD-14a in question starts on gas and then is switched over to diesel. The ignition system is just for the time that the engine is running on gas.
