I just bought a circa 1970 model 444, but the posi is hung up. The foot pedal will not retract on its own; I have to pull it up with my hand. Anyone have a similar problem? Is there a quick fix to unlock the rear-end?

ONe other problem, same tractor, the tranny gets locked up in "two gears" at once. I can usually free it by rocking the rear wheels back and forth just a bit. I welcome any input.

Hi, when that would happen on our B414D and 434D, the solution was while going forward slowly with the brake pedals in separated mode step on the left brake and release, repeat with right brake.
In your case the shaft may have become stuck in the on position. The only solution would be to take off the right brake housing and this will allow you to grab the shaft with vise grips and pull shaft out. Be carefull not to score the shaft.

Good luck

JB,
Thanks much for the input. I sometimes have a hard time stating facts in email (per my boss :-)). The shaft does come out of the right hand brake housing following the cam shape of the pedal. I don't know what is on the other end, but I suspect it's some spline-shaped coupler that slides over both axles to lock them together. If somehow the shaft became disconnected from the coupler, I wonder if I can drain the gear oil and come in through the PTO opening to manually slide the coupler off one axle; does this make any sense to you? I appreciate your time and thanks again for your feedback.

Ken, on the back of the dif lock pedal is a small hook, put a light spring on that, just enough to bring the pedal back up to normal position. The transmision shift lever on the 444s was softer metal than the earlier series of those tractors. Find a shift lever from a 434,424,414,275,276 and replace yours. That should help keep the gears from locking in. You should also feel a little resistance when you shift gears, if not the detent balls and springs may be dirty and need cleaned. They are in the transmission cover between the rails and cover.

To "Parts Man"
Thanks much for your reply; this helps part of my problem, but I see now I was unclear on the "posi" problem; the back wheels are locked up ALL the time; I cannot get the spline lock to dis-engage even when I pull up the pedal manually. any ideas on how to break the spline coupler free? I'll likely have to do an overhaul sooner or later, but would like to get through the winter without having to tear it down.
Thanks for any ideas (do you make house calls? :-)

Well, it sounded good. I'm in the Washington, DC area. One other person replied saying I can pull off the right brake housing and pull on something. The shaft itself does retract from the brake housing when I pull up the pedal, but both axels remain locked (the lugs really tear up the turf when I turn :-)) It is begining to sound as if the spline that locks the two axels together, somehow must have separated from the shaft that protrudes from the right side brake housing???? Thanks again for the input

Ken, the locking collar is held to the shaft with a pin. To get at it you need to remove the hyd unit, axles, bull gears, brake housings (inner and outer), and split the differential carrier!! It's a big job. To remove the right hand brake shaft (bull pinion), you ussualy have to remove a sping clip from the end of the dif-lock shaft. Where yours doesn't seem to be connected, maybe not. Sorry for the bad news!:( HopeI've been helpfull over all though.

PS, this thread is getting buried, maybe any more questions should be in a new thread? Also, send me your email, I can send you a parts pic from the catalogue.
