I am going to be getting either the strap or roller for my Farmall H (#300479). I was wondering what would be correct for my H? When was the change from strap to roller made? Which works better, does one have a lot more movement than the other? Thanks!!

We had 1947 H that Dad bought new, it had strap. As you know your tractor is 1948 so there is good chance that it was the same. Do not know when roller came out but I never saw one until well up in fiftys.

Obviously the roller is better or IH wouldn't have gone to it, the roller won't wear on the hitch like the strap will, but unless you are constantly using the swinging drawbar function, it probably won't make any differance. I would guess that yours would have come with the roller, but I can't say for sure.

John: The roller was optional. It's main use was to cut down wear if you were doing a lot of work with drawbar floating sideways. For most uses one is as functional as the other. I would think the roller a lot more expensive though.

The roller was introduced to catch old farmers who were in the habit of successfully stepping on the un-pinned, strap-mounted, swinging drawbar enroute to the tractor seat. The roller proved that they weren't as agile as they thought they were and gave them groin pulls to deal with. That's the way dad explained it to me. Dick Davis

Dick: As I remember it, from personal experience, you didn't need to be old for the pulled groin injuries. I remember once sitting on the cross bar nursing a quite badly skined shin along with the groin injury.

My dad always mounted the H by stepping up to platform on left side, swinging his right leg across the back of the seat, thus into the seat, all in one motion. After he bought the 300 it wasn't uncommon to find him nursing his thigh from catching it on the IPTO lever.
